So my friend's baby is 4 months old and she feels all her hair is falling out and people said that's typical? I've never heard of this. If so, do you guys recommend any products I can tell her about?

It's hormones - they can change the growth cycle of your hair. Stress and exhaustion can do it too.
My experience is you have to wait it out, and it goes back to normal before too long. Also, it seems like a lot in the shower, but usually it isn't nearly so much as it seems. If her hair is noticeably thin she should see her doctor to have a checkup, as some easily treated conditions can cause hair loss. The problem with things like Rogaine is that it doesn't deal with the underlying cause of the hair loss.

It happened to me so much so that I had balding spots at my hairline. I was hoping it was not that noticeable but a friend of mine was like "Wow you are really losing a lot of hair". After a few weeks it went away. I had my hair cut short because I had super long hair and by a year later it looked like I had long bangs and now two years later it looks like I have layers.

It definitely happens. Taking biotin can help with both hair and nail growth.

I don't know how it works for other women but I lost very little hair during my pregnancy and it tended to grow very fast and very thick. The hair loss after giving birth was more of a return to equilibrium.

It's definitely hormones. I'm not sure products will make much difference. As someone else said she just needs to wait it out.

I used to warn women about this in my childbirth classes. You don't lose a lot of hair during pregnancy but it will fall out afterwards. It can be a LOT for some women. Also, biotin can help but it can take a year for it to work for some.

YES!!! I lost a lot at my temples starting about when DS was that age. It grew back, but it took about a year to get it it all filled in. I lost very, very little hair when pregnant. I noticed I wasn't throwing hair balls from the shower in the trash very often and that it wasn't coming out when I put in gel/mousse. I figured it was hormones. THen when those hormones left my body, it came out like crazy. Lots in the shower, in my hands after putting in gel, etc. Kind of gross.
My hair stylist said she sees it ALL the time. She was able to cut my hair into some shorter layers as it was growing so that it didn't look so odd.

I lost a ton of hair beginning several weeks after having both of my kids. Dr. said it's normal. It eventually stopped coming out and I've had no problems since.
With both of my kids, at almost exactly 2 months after they were born, I broke out in horrible hives for weeks. It was horrible. Dr. said that was normal too.

I lost a TON after I had my dd. I used that stinky shampoo, Nioxin, and it seemed to slow down the hair loss.

So awful because I didn't wasn't to take Benadryl and dry up my milk so I just suffered with hives for weeks, if not months!

If I recall correctly, you lose less hair than usual whilst pregnant, hence the thick head of hair that often accompanies the famed 'pregnancy glow'. Then after the baby is born, you feel like you are losing more than usual, but really you are just returning to normal.

Yep, lost more hair after babies too. Then I would start to grow in these funky, little whispies around my temple.

I don't think I lost any hair after my babies were born but my hair is so thick I could lose half of it and no one would notice.
Having said that I will admit that there were many a time I think I pulled some out.

Post partum telogen effluvium.
It's so common, it has a name!
It happens to in almost half of pregnancies. Rather unpredictable though as it can happen to you in pregnancy and not in another. My suspicion is that it has to do with not just hormonal changes but the stage of hair growth the hairs were in at a critical time. Don't know when though. It's just my theory.
Pregnancy is a fabulous growth state, for hair as well. You actually tend to lose less hair during pregnancy itself and this happens afterwards to everyone, but to just about half in a degree significant enough to really notice.
