Reading your update and seeing Spencer's smile makes my Thanksgiving complete this year. I have thought of you often and all of the trials and stress of the past year. It is wonderful to see Spencer moving into a great new room and getting to enjoy life outside of the hospital again. Sorry about your dog, I become so attached to my pets so I am know how sad you are feeling. Thanks for taking the time to update us, it was so great seeing your family pictures.

Thank you for the update, and what a happy one! I'm so glad! Your grand-daughter is just precious and Spencer's room is great for him.
One thing we're missing in all these lovely photos, is a picture of you. I would love to "see" you. Please?

Prayers that Spencer continues to thrive in his new home.

I'm sure I'm one of many who has followed your story and been at a loss for words. I so admire you for so many many reasons - you are SO strong and inspiring and you've shown all of us how to stand up and fight. Spencer is so lucky to have you in his corner.
LOVE the photos of your boys, beautiful baby, and Spencer's room - it looks like HOME. I agree with RedSquirrel above, we need a pic of you too!
Wishing you and Spencer all the very best to come.

Awe you're so sweet!! Thank you for thinking about him and asking! In my last update I mentioned some issues with his main aide we continued to have some really major issues with her. In November he was really sick thru out the day vomiting. I either text or caĺl him daily but that day I hadn't yet done it. Spencer had texted me in the early evening before I had a chance and said mom I've been sick to my stomach all day and tired. I called the owner right away and she was very upset as she had talked to his aide 2 x that day and she hadn't said anything about Spencer. They had to take him to emergency and by the time he got home it was 3 a.m. it was another UTI he's had at least 5 more since then poor kid! After that instance I was told by the owner she would be replacing that aide in the next few weeks once the new one was done training, which I was very happy for as there were other things that she did that were just annoying. Also she wasn't very motivated to keep Spencer busy and I was starting to see some personality conflicts. So to say I was happy for a change is a understatement so I was just waiting for the switch. He and I had taken the handibus to an appointment shortly after that incident and when we arrived back at the house I told the driver I was going in with him as he wheeled him up the ramp to the house so he left thinking we were ok. I knocked on the door but no one answered I thought she was perhaps downstairs. So I kept knocking and ringing the door bell. The door was locked. It was chilly out thankfully he was dressed appropriately. Spencer kept saying mom what if you weren't here with me. I used it as an opportunity to go over what he would/could do and how to stay safe. She pulls up a good 5 minutes later and acts like it was no big deal. I said to her later out of ear shot to Spencer when I left you know had I not been with him and if for some crazy reason the driver didn't escort him inside and realized he couldn't get in and left Spencer would have been freaking out. She says to me well I was pulling up as he left I said no you didn't and if you planned on leaving you had a 3 hr window to go and come back in time for his arrival. It's a safety issue! I called about it to the owner as soon as i got in my car and she was immediately replaced thank goodness! His new staff is lovely and are very good with him and thankfully there have been no other issues and he loves his staff. He developed 2 pressure sores and we came to the conclusion it was from the seat on his new wheelchair so we replaced it with a much better cushion. He's had a lot of appointments thru the fall but all his doctors are very happy with his progress! He had a CT of his brain in January and his post hospitalization appointment with his neurosurgeon a few weeks ago. They did a bunch of memory and skills testing on him so they'll have a base line for him going forth. His short term memory is very different now compared to before his brain injury but he did much better in some areas of the testing then I thought he would yay! His doctor said his CT looked great and that he is really pleased and amazed at how well he's done given how terribly sick he was. The numerous UTI were a bit concerning to him because any infection for Spencer now is risky because of the shunt now being in his heart. He ended up with a blood infection 2x due to a UTI if you all remember. If we can ever get a totally clear lab result the plan his to start him back on a profalctic antibiotic daily to hopefully ward off any bugs. In the new year we got him enrolled in some different programs. He didn't want to do much the first few months and I didn't blame him but was eager to do some sort of activities once the new year came. Mondays he has bowling, Tuesday nights he goes to games night, Wednesday he has art therapy, Thursday he has music therapy and Friday nights they do different various activities thru out Calgary. I told him he has a better social life then his dad and I LOL! He loves all his activities and is meeting some other individuals like himself! In the Spring we will look at him doing some volunteer work at the hospital in the brain injury unit or on the Neuro unit as he has said he would like to help others. He also wants to see about volunteering at a animal rescue. He went for a tour in the Fall and really took an interest. We're also going to look at Special Olympics this Spring. He likes to keep somewhat busy but doesn't like to be overwhelmed. I thought he'd want to come home more often but he prefers to hang out at the group home on the weekends. I'm ok with that but I think it bothers my husband a bit. He struggles with that and I struggle with always worrying that he's ok and that he's got everything he needs. It's very hard to give up being the prime caregiver even when you know it needs to happen but my therapy is helping me in with dealing with that! He's been to several Flames games and is super excited to be going to the game on Saturday with his dad as they are retiring his favorite player's jersey! He still keeps in contact with patients he got close to in the hospital as well as the all the staff. Whenever he has an appointment there we try to stop in and they all go crazy when he pops in LOL. A group of them even arranged a date night to the movie with him before Christmas! Whenever I'm at the hospital for my therapy appointments nurses and porters stop me to ask about him it always touches my heart that they still think about him! I can't even tell you how many times I run into a nurse or a family from the brain injury unit in the city which is just crazy!! He just amazes me so much with his upbeat spirit and his strength. I'm so proud of him and so happy for him and this new chapter in his life! He told me that him being in the group home was the best thing that ever happened to him and that he loves being in Calgary! I think he also likes the security of all his doctors being near by! I truly believe the emotional support and prayers and positive thoughts of all the peas are what guided his recovery and healing and for that I'm so eternally grateful and thankful!

What a wonderful update. I'm so glad christine58 asked. Mostly I am just happy for Spencer that he has a life again and he is becoming an independent adult. No wonder he likes living where he is. Also, so glad the lousy aide is gone. That must be such a load off of your mind.
