Back in the early '70s, I was a missionary in the Texas Panhandle. This California girl had a hard time with the flat landscape of Lubbock and Amarillo. I could live without the ocean, but my eyes longed for the mountains to make me feel at home. Going to Palo Duro Canyon on several occasions warmed my heart. It was just like I was in the mountains. I could pretend that, instead of the Canyon being a large hole in the earth, it was instead western cliffs and mesas. It saved my sanity! I'd love to visit again, and "Texas" was wonderful!

Our area consists of flat green fields with lots of ponds and streams. And windmills. I love near a very big lake, no lakeview from my house, but it's only a 5 min walk.

Right now it's a deep green with pretty trees, but in a few weeks we'll welcome the splendor of Fall, with red and orange leaves here in the rolling hills of middle Tennessee. We have rivers and lakes, and some beautiful farmsteads are close by. I have never been to Tennessee but its on my list! I think it sounds so wonderful! If you come this way, I'll show you around!

Things are very green where I live. Living in the aptly named Green Mountain state we are mostly mountains, trees, fields, and farms with a bunch of lakes ponds and rivers thrown in.
Even our urban areas are not always so urban.

Thanks for sharing the video mom. DD loved to visit them when she was at Texas Tech and has shared many photos she took while there. This is home for me now. As beautiful as these places and the many other places I've lived are, I'm just a city girl at heart. I love the conveniences of being in the city. Yet we still have an amazing amount of wildlife. Just this morning we saw an American Bald Eagle flying over the house. There is also a pair of Peregrine Falcons who live in our area and we watch them hunt almost daily. Add in the raccoons, opossum, owls, etc and I'm just amazed to see so much wildlife in an urban neighborhood!

I live between a beach and salt marshes at the Jersey shore. (Nothing like the tv show.) We are a stop along the north/south migratory path, so we get many different birds throughout the year. The usual ones are snowy egret and blue heron, along with goldfinches and house wrens. I love to hear the Canada geese honking overhead in fall and see the egrets return in spring.

I've always wanted to go to Tennessee and am so looking forward to it. Bet it's beautiful in fall!

This is where I live, the houses across the street from us are on the river that's on the right side of the pic. There are over 400 miles of canals in the city. SaveSave

Northern Alabama. I love where I live so much that I built a house and stayed put. I'm about 20 minutes outside of a small town with a large front yard that has a beautiful creek running through it. There's these beautiful weeping willow trees spread out along the creek. My house is surrounded on the other three sides by woods and it's just so peaceful.

You describing Alabama reminds me of a lady that was a friend of my moms when I was growing up. We lived in Central Texas and this friend was a transplant to Texas from Alabama. She would always tell us that Texas is pretty but nothing is like Alabama with the creeks and and trees. And her accent! I can still hear it in my head!

March can be rather wet and cool, so pack some cozy sweaters and fluffy socks.

Wow! We'll have to get up to Palo Duro sometime. Where I live most of the time is not visually very beautiful. I like this website, which is dedicated to collecting all the reasons people live in Houston despite its many drawbacks. Houston. It's Worth It.But now I also get to spend part of each summer here: Midcoast Maine. And that doesn't suck.

Anyone know where Nazareth Texas is? Super small town about the population of 300. Famous for girls baseball. My family is all from there. I have a lot of family that have spread to Canyon and Amarillo now.

This is the view from the Ferris wheel at my county fair this weekend (Ventura County Fair). It was a foggy day, that's why the sky isn't that clear, it didn't burn all off in the afternoon. This view is looking North towards Santa Barbara and East towards Ojai and this would be South towards..Oxnard, Camarillo and Thousand Oaks (keep going and eventually you hit Los Angeles) and this one just for laughs, because I thought this was funny/interesting...now that's recycling!

I came across t his quick video about where I live. The Palo Duro Canyon is literally in my backyard. The rest of Texas has big trees, green grass, but here? Here it is dry, and instead of green we have colors of rust, gold, brown. Whats it like where you live? Ooh, I’m glad this thread got bumped. We’re thinking about visiting Palo Duro over Christmas break. Would you say that’s a good time? What else would you recommend to do in the area? That’s a part of Texas we haven’t visited yet.

Jumping in, because that's where I grew up and spent a lot of my teenage years in the Canyon. Christmas would NOT be good. The panhandle is an entirely different climate from Houston. It is likely to be very cold and very possibly snowing. You do not want to make the winding drive into the Canyon when it is icy. Like the rest of Texas, the weather is unpredictable, and there's a chance it might be moderate, but I wouldn't count on it. I'd go for fall or late spring. Summer is great too, but hot, although that's when you can see the wonderful outdoor musical "Texas" which takes place in Palo Duro Canyon. Temps get high there, but without the humidity of south Texas. Nearby, the Panhandle-Plains historical museum in the town of Canyon is really great. I was shocked when I first moved to Dallas at how mediocre the natural history museum was compared to the PP museum I grew up with (this was long before we got the Perot). I took my kids back a few years ago, and was surprised it held up to my childhood recollections. You can also check out the Cadillac Ranch, which is really just a 10-minute roadside stop. There's also the American Quarter Horse Museum, which I have never been to.

Oh girl...I don't know that I could say it would be a good time. It COULD be a great time to come - but its just as possible we will have snow and ice as well. It would be a hard call to make unless you can see a forecast. They will close the roads to the Canyon fairly frequently in the winter do to ice. But if its good weather, you can hike (or drive) all day long. Lots of wildlife. Beautiful scenery. Besides the canyon, Canyon (the town that the Palo Duro Canyon is closest to) has a great Museum. There is a University there as well. They also have a cute town square with boutiques. In Amarillo (about a ten min drive) there is more. Here is a good list. Amarillo is about 220K people, but it is still very laid back - nothing like a big city. Lubbock is about 1.5 hr away and has more to do. SaveSaveSaveSave

We were at the grand Canyon during a snow and it was magic. But no house on the edge!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaowKO13JvwHere's an aerial view. I've never skydived but the plane circles our house. Check out the last 2-2.5 minutes to see the landscape. There's a huge dairy farm two miles down the road from us. I love where I live.
