My husband and I and a bunch of our friends are traveling to Columbus for a college football game in early September. We fly in early on a Thursday morning and leave Sunday evening. On Saturday, we'll go to the game, but we don't have any plans for the other days.
We are staying at a downtown hotel. Any advice you have concerning things to do and see would be appreciated.

Columbus has a nice museum which is near downtown. Columbus has a world class zoo which is about a 20 minute drive from downtown Columbus. German Village and Brewery districts are near downtown and nice restaurants

And there is a shopping and dining district called "Short North." Lots of great and unique places to eat. You can also see if something is playing at the Ohio Theater. Dd just moved out of downtown Columbus.

So many great things to do in Columbus (said the Buckeye to the Sooner)! A visit to Schmidt's Sausage House in German Village (downtown) is quintessential Columbus. If you're a book lover, a stop at the Book Loft, with its 32 rooms, is a lot of fun (and it's usually open late, which is nice). Short North is wonderful, as Melissa mentioned, with lots of eclectic restaurants, galleries and shops. There's always something to do at Easton, which is a huge outdoor shopping and entertainment complex. The Franklin Park Conservatory is beautiful at any time of year, and the Blooms and Butterflies exhibit will still be taking place while you're in town. A stop at the North Market in the Short North is another great destination. Grab a scoop of Jeni's Ice Cream while you're there -- so many fabulous flavors, it's a hometown favorite. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask. Have a fabulous visit!

If it is rainy and you want to do some shopping, head north up 71 to the Polaris Mall

Ditto to Easton. Hope you're not going to an OSU game - or if you are, be prepared. I've been to many, many, many college football games in various stadiums and the OSU crowds are by FAR the most offensive and rude, like bordering on belligerent. It's the one away game that we now refuse to attend.

It's the one away game that we now refuse to attend. This has not been my experience at OSU games. There is trash talking among the fans but my experience has been it comes from both sides and is generally pretty friendly. There are some people who go overboard on both sides. It is one of the largest stadiums in the country and game day traffic can be insane. If your driving to the stadium be prepared to park and walk. I think there are shuttles to and from some of the parking lots. As for Columbus, you've gotten some good suggestions above. Schmitt's is a Columbus land mark. The Short North has restaurant options as well as galleries. The North Market is always fun to explore if you like local markets/farmers market type set ups.

If you are into craft beers Columbus is known for the huge number of craft breweries. My boyfriend and I go out almost every weekend and try a couple. There are quite a few of them downtown or very close: Elevator, Platform, Hoof-Hearted, Barley's, Land Grant, North High, Seventh Son, and Wolf's Ridge. And those are just the ones that are close to downtown.
There is also a nice bar downtown called Pins Mechanical that has a lot of games like duckpin bowling, pinball, and oversized Jenga. It has a really fun atmosphere, a great craft beer selection, and several good food trucks parked outside. If you like vintage video games there is a bar called 16-Bit that is close and specializes in that.
I know there are a lot of other hot spots downtown, but I'm 51 so I have a rather tame nightlife.
The Columbus Museum of Art is close to downtown. It has recently been revamped and is quite nice. COSI (Center of Science and Industry) is a nice science museum downtown.
Definitely go to the Short North. Lots of good restaurants.
Definitely get Jeni's ice cream. Current seasonal flavors: Sweet Corn & Black Raspberry, Sweet Cream Biscuits & Peach Jam, and Mocha Black Cherry. My personal favorites: Bangkok Peanut (peanut, coconut, and hot pepper (yes, really!)) and Goat Cheese with Red Cherries. Do not go expecting the normal chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, although they have neat variations of those.
I basically like to eat and drink my way across Columbus.
I love my town.
