I know this is a long shot but the peas never let me down. I am so ready for this Eclipse to be over with, it's all my husband has been talking about. He has his heart set on going down to Madras Oregon (3 hours south of us) Does anyone have any tips for seeing the eclipse there? How would this work? Do you camp out in your car the night before? I am assuming that there will be a lot of people intruding on private property, which we are not okay doing. Will there be people renting out a parking space on their property? The roads are going to be packed. Thanks, jen

I'm also 3 hours from Madras and have no desire to head there. Have you seen the traffic video heading into Prineville today!? It's pretty bad. There are definitely people selling spots on their land, but the prices are stiff.
Have you thought about Salem? You can camp in city parks for free. The traffic there will be bad too.

It's going to be insane down there! Some of my family members are going to Madras and have been planning for months finding a place to stay and a place to watch the eclipse. I have heard that some schools, ball fields, etc are renting out spaces as a fund raiser, but those spots might be all full, but worth a Google search to see if you can find a spot.

Lime is awesome! Such a cool tiny place.
Salem and Corvallis are on red alert for crowds - my friend in Corvallis said the gas stations are predicting they'll run out of gas over the weekend. The grocery stores are already feeling a little frantic.
Before we knew we were staying home, we were going to head for the Ochocos or a spot in Malheur because there are lots of places where you can wild camp.
One word of caution: there are 30 wildfires burning in OR right now. Yesterday the smoke started moving and this morning it looks "overcast" with smoke even though its still dark here (we're at the foot of the Cascades on the eastern side this week). Not sure what Monday will bring, of course.

The Albany, OR Fred Meyer looked like the bread aisle had been looted last night. I-5 traffic has been bad in the afternoons. Part of the Prineville problem is a concert and festival that is happening in conjunction with the eclipse.

Madras has a standing population of about 7,000 people. They are expecting roughly 10x's that amount for the eclipse.
There likely will be price gouging for parking spots, zero hotel or camping availability so there will probably be a whole lot of illegal camping going on.
If you go, bring your own food and water. Bring your own medical supplies. Make sure your gas tank is full prior to entering the area.
Oregon is treating this as a potential natural disaster and are urging people to be prepared for long lines, massive traffic and no emergency services.
Good luck.
ETA: also, your cell phone may or may not work...the burden on the local cell towers is expected to be more than they can handle.

On the news last night there was a little blurb about Madras. There are some farms that have been made into dry campgrounds with rows of ports potties lined up like soldiers. The farm they featured had huge grills set up and thousands of pounds of meat ready to go. They also are expecting scientists from all over the world. I think it will be a really cool experience. We have a houseful of kids and grandkids here. I was going to wait until Saturday to load up, but maybe I need to rethink that.

And eight of those grandkids are missing the first day of school to see the eclipse. The plan is to have the vans loaded up and leave right after totality. It will certainly be memorable one way or another.

It will certainly be memorable one way or another. You probably already know this, but that is everyone's plan. If you have the time to stagger your escape for a little later - that afternoon, evening or the following day, it might make your trip home a little shorter/less miserable.

There is a website where you can put in your zip code and it shows what the eclipse will look like in your area. Do that and maybe that will satisfy your husband. I was surprised how much we will be able to see (not sure if that is the exact way to say that) in central Minnesota since we are not even close to their 100% line.

I just looked up more info and see why people want to go to where it will be totality. . But it sounds like there is a 70 mile wide line so many find somewhere within that line that will be less busy? Wish we were closer. Hopefully it will still be cool where we live.

My Grandfather discovered Lime in the hills south of Durkee and has ties to the cement plant opening in Durkee. Jen

That gives a lot of room for flexibility. Madras is 93 miles south of the Oregon boarder. We could start driving south in Oregon until we get into those 70 mile radius and just find a place to pull over. Plus it puts us ahead of all the traffic leaving. Thank You! jen

Thank You! jen From what I've read, the edges of that 70 miles is a little "iffy", so make sure you're well within it. If I remember correctly, Madras is just north of the center line, so you'd need to be within 30 or less miles of Madras. What about Warm Springs?

I think you're going to find it crowded wherever you go. My husband has a gig in Huntington this weekend as they throw a big party for the out of towners who chose Oregon so they could be high during the eclipse. Eastern Oregon is full of people who are there specifically so they can get high. Just something think about. Not sure I'd want to be sharing a road with that mess. Not so happy my husband will be on Friday and Saturday.

I have friends with a ranch in Madras, they are renting it out to 180 Japanese tourists for the eclipse. The whole town in going to be a madhouse! But I would caution you about just pulling over, the National Guard is being activated to keep that from happening and keep the traffic moving.
I'm making my last trip to the store until next week to make sure I'm good to go for the weekend. I have 5 people coming down from the Seattle area, and 4 coming from Ashland. It's going to be a full house!

I live near Albany and happen to work right in the center of totality. I am not sure I will be able to get to work on Monday - but am going to try...my mom came up from southern Oregon and we have a few relatives coming to town as well. Our home is in the 98% zone of totality.

I am not looking forward to driving from idaho to snohomish wa. we are leaving right after the eclipse.. I am trying to talk dh into going via highway 2.. vs I-90.. which I think will be a parking lot of people going from eastern OR back to seattle area and I know hiway 2 like the back of my hand. dh wants me to drive so he can set up his phone as a hotspot and do work while we drive..

my SIL just moved to Salem from California. a friend of hers wanted to visit from California for the eclipse but she couldn't find a flight and she didn't want to deal with all the traffic. we are supposed to see 60% of it here in Los Angeles. ehh, that's fine with me.

You're crazy to go if you don't already have space planned. The event outside of Prineville had a 30 MILE LONG BACKUP of cars trying to get there last night. Every place that's selling space is sold out. I think it's too late to just drive and hope.
ETA: Just read on Twitter that the backup is now 35 miles.

My mom is in assisted living about an hour and half from me --she is in the path of totality (Oregon). I told her I am not going with my family to Central OR because I don't want to deal with the crowds/traffic. She asked me to come watch with her --but she didn't know if it was "AM or PM" haha. Staying home is fine with me!

The Oregon State Police just tweeted that 8 miles of highway 26 is totally backed up east of Prineville with eclipse traffic. It's only Thursday! Ugh.
I see this was already posted above, but wow, I was surprised it's already starting.
We are going out for provisioning tonight, and then I guess we're home for the duration.

You could not pay me to attempt to drive to OR from the Seattle area to watch the eclipse. Traffic is going to be insane. We've attempted to drive to Portland for Thsnksgiving before...a busy time but not as bad as the eclipse. Our three hour drive took six hours.
