Funny! I used to hear parents complain all of the time about supplies at the beginning of the year. I had their kid in class for 1080 hours a year. We needed pencils. We needed the colored pencils, and lots of paper. I bought for my kids and then I bought for the parents who didn't want to send their kids to school with supplies. Kleenex was the worst. We would go through several boxes a week and sometimes even more when kids were really sick. In my area, teachers bought extra supplies for the kids since there wasn't a budget for that. I easily spent $100 extra a month on things needed in my classroom. I always loved it when parents would send in extra supplies and tell me to stash them for the kid who didn't have what they needed. Kids hated not having supplies and everyone else knowing about it. Being able to hand them a nice three-ringed binder and colored pencils of their own made their day.

I send the 3 pack of Kleenex in with my son every month! I hadn't thought about sending other stuff. His teacher last year was great about alerting us when supplies were getting low. I should go stock up on some more while the prices are still low!

Thanks for reminding me that it is that time of year. I don't have kids, but I was one of those whose mother could not afford buy me supplies. I used to look for pencils that had been sharpened down so low that they were discarded and dig through the trash to try to find papers that didn't have much writing on one side so maybe I could erase it and use the paper. I now usually go through the requests on Donors Choose each August or early Sept. and find a teacher who is requesting supplies for her kids. If you are not familiar with the site, teachers post requesting help purchasing what they need. They list specifics and where they are buying what they have requested, so it is legit. You can sort requests by type or location and don't have to fund the entire project if it is too expensive for you. You can contribute toward the goal. I tend to skip over the ones that want I-Pads for the entire class or trips to Spain to practice their Spanish, but do look for those that request basic supplies, art supplies or books. When you contribute you do get little notes of thanks from some of the kids once the requested items are delivered. I particularly like to choose local schools or ones I went to when I was a kid. www.donorschoose.org/

love it! I do have to say, this is the first year I have ever not heard parents complain about buying supplies. It has been wonderful!

I actually like shopping for school supplies. And now with both in college it's all bookstore stuff. No crayons, no pencils, no colored pencils.
So I went out and bought stuff for my niece who started her first year of teaching.,

LOL! That was great. TFS. Like hop2, I love buying supplies, and typically wind up with more than we even need, even after donating some to school. I just love paper, pencils, pens in general---that's probably part of why I started scrapbooking--extra pretty paper! extra pretty pens!! yay!! So when Staples is flashing that 25 cent notebook ad in my face or Target is telling me I can get a 64 box of crayons for under 3 bucks---it's like torture not to buy them. So on a more serious note, thanks for the link, missymarlin. I'd be happy to find other people who could use some school supplies.

Isn't someone going to come be sanctimonious about how they love their kids more than this lady?

Loved it!
My kids go back Tuesday. I'll buy a truckload of supplies just to get through tomorrow. They have just had enough of each other and me too.
