We've never really been on a cold-weather vacation. I know we'll need a coat, and boots, and plenty of under layers. (We can get a great deal on these at Costco, so need to keep an eye out for these.) We live in TX, so we don't have tons of COLD weather things, except for jackets, and an under layer, or 2.
We will probably be going early April. We want to have a good amount of daylight, but also plenty of night, so we would have a better chance of seeing the Northern Lights.
Anyway, I know we will need those things mentioned above, and we want to pack as few suitcases as possible, so, what are the most important items to start looking for during winter item sales here? We'll have plenty of time to start collecting hings, especially since a lot of stores are starting to put out sweaters and boots. I THINK I have good boots, and a good coat, but want to keep an eye out, if there is something better.

Since space is an issue I'd look for packable down coats. They don't take up much space and mine is really warm!

It's gonna depend on the temps there in April. Do you know what the avg temp is? I mean, I wouldn't go overboard if it's not that cold yet. Is april a good time for northern lights there? like for us, it's winter months.

A great underlayer I use for skiing is the $5 fleece lined leggings you can get at Walgreens. They are seriously comfy and keep me toasty under my ski pants.
You can also get those heat packs to put in your mittens (warmer than gloves).
Layering up is key. Agree with the down jacket - will scrunch up better for packing.

Wool is your friend. Will keep you warm even if it's wet.

actually no one wears wool anymore. Not even up here in the northern boonies. There is such better technology these days with all the under armor, and wicking materials, much lighter and less itchier.

Rain gear and good waterproof footwear!!
I lived in Iceland for 2 years. I may snow one day and rain the next. It will be wet, so I would really be prepared for that. And windy.

Lightweight, warm, not as stinky as the synthetics get with sweat. These aren't the itchy, bulky wool sweaters of Frozen. |
