I know, right? The same thing happened to me a few months ago when I finally realized that our cable company had all seasons of Game of Thrones available for free on Demand... I'm up to the middle of Season 3 now, I think. I can't watch any more than 3 or so episodes at once, though- it's just too intense for more than that at a time.
honestly, after I got over the *squick* factor of the brother/sister scenes in the first few episodes, that doesn't bother me any longer; they're not portraying it like it's *okay* or expected, or anything. Game of Thrones is set in a different country / universe, and it's not so much sexual as it was for consolidating power- a la ancient Egyptian kings / queens.
Every once in a while some VERY unexpected violence will catch me unawares, so I watch parts of each episode through my fingers, lol. And I can NOT remember everyone's names!! I wonder if I'd like the books, but the sheer NUMBER of different characters to keep straight is putting me off from trying to read the books. At least with watching the show, I can recognize characters by how they look.

Thanks for the help, monicad and Katie : time jumps, omissions and just plain makes you think complications, particularly at the start, are no deterrent at all. The Lost-type stuff I despise is where we as an audience are treated with disdain, as if we will swallow anything to allow a lazy writer to not think things through, or a producer/ director to stick stuff s/he loves in willy nilly

My husband and I just started this show as well. I was shocked when both my kids were very familiar with the series and said they knew lots of kids who were watching it. They're young teens - are people really watching GoT with their kids? We've only seen the first couple episodes, but man, I'm no prude, but I don't know that I can imagine watching those sex scenes with my 13 year old son. I taught ten/eleven year olds and was horrified with the things some had seen and others had seen at their friends' houses when their parents were gone. We had every channel under the sun on our television and every single show that was rated R or MA was blocked until they were mature! They also have a lot of access on their smart phones.

All I can say is if you like any character, don't get attached. It's a great show, very intense but worth the ride. I'm still catching up on the last two seasons but I'm not one to get terribly pissed about spoilers. I have a general idea of what happens which I kind of like. Seeing how the spoilers actually play out is always a nice surprise. I'm a little pro-spoilers too. It is never the plot twists that interest me - it is the journey to get there that I like. I just started the HBO Now free trial about 10 days ago and I think I am up half way through the 3rd season now. Of course, I started watching while we were stuck in a hotel for 6 weeks mid-move last season, so I've had a fairly good idea of where everything was headed to. It has been a great ride so far and I am loving the show. I do find that I have to limit myself to two or three episodes a night or I tend to get overwhelmed and lose track of who is doing what where.

I read the books before the show started and so it's easier to know what to expect, even though by now they've somewhat diverged from the storylines in the books. I don't have HBO, so I'm always binge-watching after each season ends. I do have to avoid spoilers because of the book vs. show differences. DD also watches (away at college) so she knows not to give anything away until I've seen it (even though we've both read all the books). It's easier to keep track of who's who when you have the books for reference! And yes, OP - Peter Dinklage ROCKS!

Also, a huge help to me was after every episode I would go to TV.com and read the episode recap by Tim Surette. He is really funny, and he read all of the books, so he explain things in detail for me and made the show that much more enjoyable . Another thing I'd suggest is using Game of Thrones Wiki to help keep track of people (and their relationship to each other) and places. I sometimes watch episodes with my iPad open to that site.

I'd suggest making a bunch of family trees, but that might just creep you out after a while.

Welcome to the club! We started about a year ago...and have now watched all the way through twice and I just started reading the first book. Just a guess but we'll probably watch it all again twice before Season 8 comes out. Totally obsessed.
I think this is the most intricate and well written show I have ever watched.
