A bamboo skewer used to grill chicken (so charred on the end) pierced my skin. It's barely bleeding. It's been over 10 years since my last one.

Not because of a charred piece of bamboo that's had chicken on it, but you should just stop in and get one anyway if it's been over ten years. That way you won't have to wonder next time.

Not tonight, but you should get one-the recommendation for adults is to also receive a Pertussis booster along with it.

Does it have to be tonight? No, I just meant you should get one at your convenience. Lots of pharmacies will now give it to you. They're given by pharmacists who have received training in injections, so it's safe.

Pretty sure tenanus is only for metal Actually that's a common misperception, that of the rusty nail. It's most commonly found in the soil, especially where animals roam and poop. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetanus

Yes, eventually, but you don't need Tetanus for anything but metal.

The tetanus bacteria, Clostridium tetani, is a spore and is found in soils exactly how @z*G has mentioned. That bacteria can live on lots of different surfaces besides metal....glass, wood, concrete, etc. We use the Tdap vaccine which will cover you for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. We like to use 10 years as a guide for receiving the Tdap but if you've had a significant penetrating injury after 5, we will revaccinate you. *edit: you don't need it tonight but I'd get one soon just to keep you covered. You can get tetanus from cat bites so it doesn't just come from metal.

Pretty sure tenanus is only for metal It's for soil mainly but also includes manure and dust that will enter the body through cuts and wounds.

My rule of thumb with those kinds of things is, when in doubt, revaccinate.

Sorry about your ouchie! Do clean it out and put an antibiotic ointment on it, but as others have said, do get an update soon. I read a story one time in the Reader's Digest about a woman living in the south where there was tons of nutshells on the ground. She had gone out barefoot to hang some clothes on the line and stepped on a pecan shell that pierced the bottom of her foot. She ended up getting tetanus. That's when I learned you could get it from other things than metal.

The shots are worth getting and keeping up to date! You do NOT want to risk getting tetanus!!

Pretty sure tenanus is only for metal Tetanus is not for metal. The bacteria grow best in a low oxygen environment, so any wound that pushes into the body has the potential to push the bacteria into a place where it can grow and multiply quickly.
