Music to my ears. So many of the movies for the last decade at least, have valued ear-shattering over story-telling. CGI over character. Maybe, just maybe, other people are starting to feel the same. Even the movie posters are just dark, depressing, scary and/or aggressive. No thanks. I've got great storytelling on Netflix. I've got a decent-sized TV, a comfy (old) couch and a popcorn maker and the ability to pause when one of us needs to talk or go to the bathroom. It'll take a lot to get me out to the theater. And by "a lot" I don't mean yet another tired retread or sequel or prequel or Emoji movie. www.torontosun.com/2017/08/25/the-10-biggest-box-office-bombs-of-the-summer-from-baywatch-to-transformers

The only movie we went to all summer was Spider-man, and I thought it was awesome, but nothing else appealed to me at all. I can't even tell you what else came out this summer

It's just too expensive to go to the theater these days. It's $50 for just tickets alone for the 4 of us and who only knows how much if we want a snack or a drink. I have a popcorn machine here and I know how to make it taste just like from the movie theater and a nice big tv...can't ask for more than the comfort of our own home. Even our boys agree it's better at home.

We didn't make it to one movie this summer....we even missed Spider-Man and Wonder Woman.
I need to check the reviews for the new Daniel Craig movie, the preview looked interesting plus Daniel Craig!

We saw a few of the earlier summer movies (Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Despicable Me), but after I took the boys to see the ridiculously awful Emoji Movie, we were DONE paying to see anything. That movie killed it for us. We went bowling on rainy days instead.

DD and I saw Wonder Woman and liked it. DD saw Spiderman and liked it. I don't think DH has gone to any movies this summer. That was the extent of our movie-going. We don't go often, but if there's something we really want to see, we'll go. Not much this summer, for sure!

I saw The Dark Tower. HUGE disappointment. Especially when I had to spend $15 on the ticket.

I am sick of superhero movies and the third, fourth, umpteenth sequel to franchises that should have had two movies, tops. I'm sick of gross-out comedies. I don't watch horror movies. What's left??? Bad kids' movies and that's about it.
My husband and I have been avid moviegoers for almost 30 years, it's one of our favorite things to do together...but in the past few years, we've only seen two, maybe three, movies in theaters per year. Some releases we say, "That would be a good one to rent," but we never get around to that, so obviously they don't even look good enough to make that minimal effort, much less drive to the theater and pay $11.50 each to see there. This summer we've seen Wonder Woman and War for the Planet of the Apes, that's it. Every couple weeks, one of us will say how much we'd love to go to a movie, and when we look at the listings....nada. It's disappointing.
(I'm also one of the few people who can't stand the huge new reclining seats almost all the theaters have now. We drive out of our way to go to a theater with regular comfortable seats. But that may be a rant for another thread.)

I saw The Dark Tower. HUGE disappointment. Especially when I had to spend $15 on the ticket. Me too...thought it was alright. But then I'm completely out of the Stephen King loop on that one. A lot of it probably went over my head and I didn't even realize it. We went to the matinee so, only spent $8 a ticket. Not too bad. Our theater is starting to catch a clue...they've started bringing back classics like "Gone With The Wind", "Close Encounters", and "Singin' in the Rain". I'll be going to the big screen for any one of those!

I loved all those books when I was a teen-ager, and had some high hopes for the movie. Glad I didn't spend the money, I guess. We haven't been able to find anything we wanted to spend $$ on (even at matinee prices) since Wonder Woman. Oddly enough-- most of the movies that are showing right now are ones we haven't even seen any previews or commercials for, at all. Between on Demand and stuff we have recorded on our DVR, we're set for a while. Something has to look pretty enticing for us to spend *theater* money on it.

I love the extras in fancy cinemas with first-class flight style seats and service BUT not even those can guarantee us uninterrupted movie pleasure, free of others on their smartphones yadda yadda.
For a couple of years now we got part of our recent movie fix on long haul flights but now that these services are directed to an app/iPad that I may not be able to carry and the offerings are as described by the pea posters above... looks like the airport paperbacks will be back in style.

But the multiplex has been overrun w/superhero, prequel/sequel stuff. Maybe we are coming to the post-multiplex world.

sometimes we (well, I, lol) will decide to see a movie in the theater because the visuals will be stunning on a HUGE screen (think Revenant, Lord of the Rings, etc. style visuals) but most movies will be just fine on our 65 inch television.
Unfortunately, I think movie studios do the superhero / sequel / prequel stuff because they know they have a built-in audience (teen-agers and superhero junkies), and the characters are ones that people already know. Movie studios nowadays are all about that opening weekend gross, and that's IT.

The Dark Tower was my gateway series of books leading to The Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter. I read the first book when I was 14! The first minute of this video (which came out before the movie) explains it perfectly. I thought that The Dark Tower was going to be my new movie franchise addiction. How wrong I was.

I suppose movies in the theater are struggling more like book stores have for years. It is just too easy to see them later at a fraction of the cost.

(I'm also one of the few people who can't stand the huge new reclining seats almost all the theaters have now. I LOVE the recliners - lots of space between the rows, pick seats before you go, it's great! (Other than the fact that my feet don't touch the ground, so I don't have the option NOT to recline.)

My friend who is a theater major , the working side not acting, fees that big screen movies are in their way out. It's just to expensive t get one made.
As fir me? I live the big sci-fy movies and super heroes. Always did/always will. I can't wait for aquaman, and deadpool to be released.

I rarely go to the theater. I would rather relax and watch from home. The only movie we have seen (at home via Pay Per View) was "The Case for Christ." Excellent movie!

i have to admit i am getting sick and tired of all the sequels and remakes. this summer was the least we have ever gone to the movies and we used to go just about every weekend. now that theater seats are $18 EACH, we are more likely to be picky about what we see.

My DH and I used to regularly go to movies as well, but lately we haven't gone it all because the pickings were so slim. But I actually love the new seats, I like putting the armrest up and being able to snuggle with DH while we watch a movie. May I ask why you don't like them?

But that may be a rant for another thread.) wow, we LOVE those reclining seats! that's why we are willing to pay $18 a ticket. they are super comfy and you can even get to order food and beverages to be brought to your seat. plus it's reserved seating so we don't have to worry about getting to the theater early to score good seats or being asked to scoot over so late comers can squeeze in. and finally and most importantly (to me at least), no chance of anyone ever kicking the back on my chair in those reclining seats! that, itself, makes it worth every penny.

I haven't gone to a theater in a couple years.
The ticket prices are insane. Forget about snacks.
The audience always leaves me surly.
And the time from in the theater to on demand is not so long that I can't wait.

I haven't seen any of the ones on that list. My husband and son saw Alien and loved it. They've been to some others that weren't on the list that they liked too. I went to Spiderman, Baby Driver and Hitman's Bodyguard. They go to quite a few movies, my daughter goes to some with them but I don't go very often. It's rare that they're going to see something that I'm interested in. Three, especially so close together is a lot for me. I really enjoyed all 3 of the ones I saw though. We usually go early to mid-day on Sunday (my son is off on Sundays & Mondays), prices aren't too bad then, the seats are comfortable, and we haven't had any issues with people being rude.
Logan Lucky looks funny, I'd like to see that one too.

DD & I went to Wonder Woman. His synopsis was spot on - Captain America as a woman written by Rick Riordan. I still enjoyed it. DS & DH went to see spiderman and were not impressed, but dh is a big spiderman comic book fan. DH saw the war one. We usually go to the drive in at least once but couldn't find any weekend that had two shows that we wanted to see.

It takes a lot to drag me out to the theater. I'm more of a "rent it from FIOS on-demand and make my own popcorn" kind of gal. lol
That said, I did go to "Wonder Woman" because dd wanted to, and I did enjoy it.
Before that the last movies I saw in an actual theater were "Hidden Figures" and "The Martian". Oh, and any new "Star Wars" that were out.

I still love going to the movies. Especially now that they all mostly have the recliners and reserved seating. I have one friend who's my horror movie/comedy buddy. Another is my chick flick/superhero buddy. Love dinner and a movie with a friend. And of course a trip to Barnes and Noble.
This summer has been pretty boring movie wise. There were a couple good ones in May, and then in June and July there was almost nothing I cared to see! Finally a few more good ones are about to come out. I did see Annabelle Creation and Hitmans Bodyguard last week. I needed some good action with some laughs and horror. They both were good for what they were.

glad that I am not the only one with these frustrations with the movie industry.
My sister made me see Wonder Woman which I thought was actually really good despite sleeping through about 15 minutes. Dunkirk had fabulous cinematography although the movie was really hard to follow. I loved Spider-Man. And was so excited about seeing The Glass Castle!!! So for me that's actually not a bad summer at the theaters.
