Supposedly this is a real picture. It's surreal isn't it. Hard to believe they would look that calm and just be sitting around. One women looks like she is doing some hand sewing. I found it on CNN.

I have seen it, from what I read, the owner's daughter tweeted it to get help because the water level went from ankle deep to chest deep in 15 mins.
I believe they have all been rescued, thankfully.

I saw it yesterday and my heart broke....I cannot imagine how scared they may have been, no knowing when/if they would be rescued.

The owner sent the picture to her SIL and DD to get help... They are all now safe.

Talking about the resilient older generation I saw this photo on the BBC news site of a lady and her dog on an air bed waiting for assistance. I don't know the result but hope she was somewhere warm and dry asap.

I know nothing more than seeing the photo, but it made me want to vomit when I did. I don't care how fast the water rose.... they knew there was a hurricane coming... A FREAKING HURRICANE. Why weren't they evacuated before the storm hit?! Nursing homes are entrusted to care for some of the most vulnerable and fragile people in our society and this is appalling to me as a health care worker.
But at the same time it just goes to show what "the greatest generation" can handle while last night's news showed able bodied young people, one after another, being rafted out of areas and screaming and crying about why no one was answering when they called 911.

I'm sure someone from TX will know more than I will, but many of the areas weren't evacuated because they didn't know they would be flooded. And, honestly, there's no way to evacuate 2+million people. Where are they ALL going to go? I agree that the vulnerable should be thought of first in situations like these, but they probably didn't think it would be that bad where they were.

We saw that picture on CNN last night and I got teary-eyed. I'm glad they're okay, but that must have been so frightening.

She was fiddling with her life preserver (the red items) not hand sewing.

When they tried to evacuate people ahead of previous storms, as many people died in the evacuation as died in the storm, Rita is one example. Because those patients are vulnerable you have to weigh the impact of evacuating as well as the impact of not evacuating. Evacuating is arduous and sometimes fatal for some, in all but the most extreme circumstances it is safer to shelter nursing home patients in place. Unfortunately this time the worst case scenario occurred.

I thought I read people got conflicting info from state/local governments about evacuation. And some won't evacuate regardless.

And I just heard on NPR that the water rose much faster than anyone thought it would.

Per this article some areas that are not in floodplains have been flooding because of raised developments, overtaxed drainage and paved prairieland. It is complicated. SaveSaveSaveSave

I didn't see the cat at first but I thought that those little snacks on the table looked an awful lot like cat food!

That photo is very hard to look at and it must have been terrifying for the care home owner when the water started to rise so rapidly. The initial report I saw said her phone was dying and she wasn't getting any response from calling 911.
I think she did everything she could to look after her residents.

I was almost physically sick when I saw this picture. My mom is wheelchair bound in a nursing home and deathly afraid of water. I'm sure if she was in this situation she would have died of a heart attack. I can"t believe how calm these residents appear. I am so glad these people were rescued and hopefully the cat was too
