A neighbor gave me a bag of banana peppers. Me, not knowing anything about them(I honestly didn't know they were hot), decided to pickle some when I made my dill pickles. Mistake, big mistake. My hands are on fire. Anyone know how to deal with the burn?

Olive oil soak! Worked for me when I touched habaneros and then my face! It's this method.

I've heard to grate potatoes and bury your hands in them. Never tried it myself but it's worth a shot.

My husband puts his hands in milk if he makes this mistake. Reckons it works.

Milk should neutralize the pepper oil causing the heat. Soak your hands in some, rinse and repeat. Slathering your hands in yogurt would do the same thing if you don't have a lot of milk around.

My husband eats some pepper, maybe reapers, that are so hot, if I kiss him within a couple hours of his eating it, my lips burn. I use coconut oil and rub it onto my lips, then wipe it off with a washcloth. I follow with yogurt, which I apply like lipgloss. We have a system because this tends to happen at my house.

The guy that gave them to me, just told me that they are hot, Hungarian, banana peppers.

That happened to me a couple years ago. I picked a hot pepper w/my hands. That's how we found out our banana pepper seeds were mis-labeled. I spent an entire Bunco night w/my hands wrapped around an ice pack. It'll be better in couple hours. YOUCH!

Oh, and he told me that his wife had to go to the ER because her hands blistered. The jars I made are going in the trash.

Oh no I'm sorry, I hope you get relief! The peppers you pickled are probably ok if you took the seeds/veins out though.
I learned the hard way to wear disposable gloves when working with peppers too!

I did take the seeds and veins out, but I am afraid of them!

I did take the seeds and veins out, but I am afraid of them! I don't blame you!! I just hate to see you lose canning efforts after your pain too! I'm not familiar with that type though.

Yeah, milk. High fat milk or even half and half. That's what we use when we eat a chile that burns too hot. Alternatively, milk chocolate. No, really. So I would soak my hands in milk/cream while eating chocolate.

HOT soapy water and wash them for a minute or two. You want to open up the pores on your skin and wash out the pepper oils. Don't put anything on your hands that lock the oils in. Oh yeah don't touch your lady bits or your eyes either.
ETA: Should have said soap and hot water. I use Dawn under hot running water.

After a couple of hours the pain was bearable and by this morning totally gone except for one thumb!

My Mexican mother-in-law taught me that and it works!
