Texas peas - where should we donate our money? Frankly the Red Cross has left a bad taste in my mouth and I would prefer to donate to a local charity that is doing work in the front lines.

Red Cross and United Way. One of them has a hotline (211) but I can't remember which one. Sorry you've had a poor experience with the RC.

If you're not opposed to faith groups you could donate to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), or to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). I'm sure other denominations have similar groups but these are the ones I'm most familiar with (I'm PCUSA and I went to a Methodist seminary ) Presbyterian Disaster AssistanceUnited Methodist Committee on Relief

Below is a partial list of what we have received from our County Commissioner for vetted charities. I'll update as more are communicated to me. Houston Food Bank Food Bank of Corpus Christi Austin Pets AliveHouston Humane Society Houston SPCA San Antonio Humane Society A Family Business (Jensen Ackles new brewery in Dripping Springs)JJ Watts YouCaring CampaignHurricane Harvey Relief Fund - started by Houston's mayor and managed by the City of Houston's 503c non-profit. The Cajun Navy Relief Fund. These guys hit the ground running in Houston with boats ready to start saving lives. They haven't stopped since. HERE is a link of the Cajun Navy arriving in Seabrook, TX and making their way eastward toward flood victims. It brought tears to my eyes. The United Way is working directly with many local organizations across the coastal region. You can choose the county in which you wish to help at THIS page. Houston is in Harris County but other counties like Victoria and Brazoria are going to need lots of help to rebuild.

This is my favorite. They have been showing all over the news the trucks that are on the way. They have an easy to see donate button on their website. They will stay for years if needed. www.samaritanspurse.org

I will be donating to the United Way Galveston County Mainland. I was a long time volunteer in Galveston county. The UW will distribute funds to local agencies. The UW Greater Houston is also a good group but, I don't believe they support Dickinson. I'm afraid Dickinson may never recover from this. I lived and volunteered in League City (just to the north of Dickinson) may people in Dickinson struggle to get by on a good day.

I'm thinking also there is going to be some sort of live concert/telethon very soon.
Like we did for 911 and for Katrina.
I worked for Verizon back then and we provided the donation phone banks (out of our call centers) for the 911 Tribute to Heroes. We all volunteered to go to man the phones to take the donations. I wasn't an operator but they trained us real quick and those phones started jumping. I will never, ever forget that. Taking calls from people just wanting to give anything they could. The calls started on the East coast, and as the time zones changed, so did the earnest calls and the accents of the people. I'm tearing up just remembering it.
In the meantime I'll donate through my church.
