Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced Tuesday that transgender troops in the military would be allowed to continue serving pending the results of a study. The announcement comes days after President Trump signed a memo barring transgender people from enlisting in the military while instructing Mattis to explore how to handle those currently serving in the armed forces. "Once the panel reports its recommendations and following my consultation with the secretary of Homeland Security, I will provide my advice to the president concerning implementation of his policy direction," Mattis said in the statement reported by multiple media outlets Tuesday. "In the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place." thehill.com/homenews/administration/348484-mattis-halts-trump-transgender-policy-pending-study

Statement by Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis on Military Service by Transgender Individuals The Department of Defense has received the Presidential Memorandum, dated August 25, 2017, entitled Military Service by Transgender Individuals. The department will carry out the presidents policy direction, in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security. As directed, we will develop a study and implementation plan, which will contain the steps that will promote military readiness, lethality, and unit cohesion, with due regard for budgetary constraints and consistent with applicable law. The soon arriving senior civilian leadership of DOD will play an important role in this effort. The implementation plan will address accessions of transgender individuals and transgender individuals currently serving in the United States military. Our focus must always be on what is best for the militarys combat effectiveness leading to victory on the battlefield. To that end, I will establish a panel of experts serving within the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to provide advice and recommendations on the implementation of the presidents direction. Panel members will bring mature experience, most notably in combat and deployed operations, and seasoned judgment to this task. The panel will assemble and thoroughly analyze all pertinent data, quantifiable and non-quantifiable. Further information on the panel will be forthcoming. Once the panel reports its recommendations and following my consultation with the secretary of Homeland Security, I will provide my advice to the president concerning of his policy direction. In the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place. I expect to issue interim guidance to the force concerning the presidents direction, including any necessary interim adjustments to procedures, to ensure the continued combat readiness of the force until our final policy on this subject is issued.

So ... DT didn't consult with his secretary of defense and order a study before making his pronouncement? Shocking.

I kinda love this news. Anything that makes Trump unhappy works for me at the moment, I confess.

DT cannot deal with those who hesitate or say no. I was not thrilled with all his choices, but Sessions has said no (with him I am still sitting on a very wobbly fence), Tillerson seems to have taken the reasonable road, Mattis seems an honorable man. It concerns me who would DT choose to replace any of them. He has not made 100s of appointments that he is required to make.

"Trump’s haphazard transgender military ban... This was presented as Mattis “freezing” the transgender ban, when in fact it was already frozen. And it was frozen because Trump himself froze it on Friday. That said, the directive itself and the need to delay implementation of the ban for six months show how haphazard this whole process has been. Trump tweeted more than a month ago that the government would not “accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. military.” The actual policy is looking far more fungible than that hard-and-fast statement made in a series of out-of-nowhere tweets. Trump clearly jumped the gun, and now reality is setting in."www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/08/30/trumps-haphazard-transgender-military-ban/Let's face facts. Trump cares nothing about the presidency and being the president. He cares about crowds, applause and fattening his portfolio by using the country as leverage to his own fortune. Period. Full stop.

As much as I tend to feel hope at signs of disruption in this White House, I wondered, my GOSH, if Mattis/Tillerson/Kelly get fed up and leave, or if trump fires them, WHO THEN?!

I don't think Kelly or Mattis will get fed up, they've dedicated their entire adult lives to serving, the amount of sacrifices they and their families have made are immeasurable. Fired perhaps, but not fed up and quit, they know the stakes are far too high.

He cares about crowds, applause and fattening his portfolio by using the country as leverage to his own fortune. Period. Full stop. He proved that for sure yesterday. Not once did he mention/show concern for the victims in Texas.. Just an inappropriate congratulations, what? ? www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/axelrod-its-not-always-about-you-mr-president/ar-AAqXaST"Startlingly, he did not utter one syllable about those who have lost their lives, their homes or businesses in the floods that are still swelling over southeast Texas, overwhelming the heroic first responders and volunteers who are straining to meet its demands. He had no solace for the tens of thousands of evacuees, some of whom were separated from their families in the storm and are now warehoused in arenas, left to wonder what comes next. Donald Trump swept into Corpus Christi on Air Force One. Never missing an opportunity to sell, he alighted with his trademarked USA cap atop his thatched dome. It was clear he had come to take a bow, not to offer sympathy for the victims or hope to the dispossessed.

I know you all will likely call me a naive/crazy idealist, but I still say that firing someone like Mattis will be a back breaker for Trump. Same with his talk about leaving NAFTA. There truly IS only so far the Republicans are going to allow Trump to go before they say 'Enough.. it's too dangerous to have him in office,' and they support impeachment.

He doesn't even pretend he cares!
