www.salon.com/2017/08/30/evangelicals-bigotry-filled-nashville-statement-is-denounced-for-its-anti-lgbt-bigotry/"A group of evangelicals have developed a so-called “Christian manifesto,” which proudly pronounces their prejudices against members of the LGBT community. According to the Nashville Statement released by The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, “self-conception as male or female should be defined by God’s holy purposes in creation and redemption as revealed in Scripture.” By contrast, they “deny that adopting a homosexual or transgender self-conception is consistent with God’s holy purposes in creation and redemption.” This is one of the many discriminatory positions adopted by the Nashville Statement. It also takes issue with same-sex and polyamorous marriages, premarital sex, transgender identities and homosexuality in general. “We deny that the approval of homosexual immorality or transgenderism is a matter of moral indifference about which otherwise faithful Christians should agree to disagree,” the Nashville Statement reads." Does anyone remember any equivalently PR-released manifestos against adultery, divorce and remarriage?! You know, the things Jesus actually spoke against?!? No?!?! Curious. Or not.

I feel like sometimes Christians get so busy making big proclamations that they can't see people. That disappoints me.

At a time like this, they chose to focus on condemning people. Why not band together to serve those hurting from Harvey? Why not come out against racism and the Nazis?
I'm a Christian and this message is disturbing.

These are not my Christians!
Our church proudly displays banners "All are welcome here". We also support a local Muslim group in our building. The sad thing about that? We've received over 1500 hatred filled emails just for sharing our office space!

All I can say is, these folks do more to turn people away from God than anything else. Way to preach the gospel.

Here's John Pavlovitz's response to it... he's "translated" it. You have to laugh at his translation in a way, and cry also. But he's right on the mark and the sooner these evangelical "Christians" fade away the better. John Pavlovitz's response to the Nashville letter

I know some civil rights advocates who are concerned that this statement was crafted with an eye towards litigation around gay rights--to bolster the claim that for (at least some) Christians, their religious beliefs require them to discriminate against LGBTQ+ folks.

UGH and poor Nashville, the city is a lovely welcoming progressive place... horrible to have the city's name associated with it.

Anything that involves Somali's, whether it is a car accident, child drowning, Habitat for Humanity Home, or a Somali grocery store getting a grant so they can provide more variety of foods in their store, people are awful.

SaveSave"Evangelical Christians are at the precipice of extinction—and we know it. We are a profoundly endangered species coming to grips with the urgency of the moment, of our impending disappearance, of the whole thing going sideways here in the Bible Belt—and we’re in a bit of a panic. We are leaking people from our churches, watching multitudes walk away in disgust, and losing market share in the religious landscape, as well as the vice-like stranglehold we’ve had on American politics for the past 241 years—and we are rightly terrified.... We know that the only hope we have in regaining a foothold in the culture (as onion skin thin as that hope is), is to stoke the passion fires of our remaining base, who are rapidly dwindling to now include only those most susceptible to fear of the other; those who are most easily aroused by talk of other people’s bedrooms and body parts and marriages. We’re preaching hard to what’s left of our hateful choir." Amen, John.

I think UU stands for Unitarian Universalist? We have a couple in our community and every single one has a black lives matter banner out front.

I lived in the Bible Belt and man, do these people like to tell other people they're going to hell. I have a big enough job getting myself into heaven to worry about who else is going. Wouldn't it be disappointing to get there find that, yes there actually is a heaven but it's full of people like that?

There have been some very good responses by various clergy to the Nashville statement. If you see them and they touch you, share them. Someone who is hurting from this hate filled garbage would like to see a light in the darkness.
Poor Nashville. To have their name tacked on to this piece of judgmental tripe.

I think UU stands for Unitarian Universalist? We have a couple in our community and every single one has a black lives matter banner out front. Yes, Unitarian Universalist. Social Justice work is a pillar of our non-creedal faith, where all are welcome. You can be an atheist, theist, Buddhist, Christian (though those are in the minority, there are Christian UUs) agnostic... you can be LGBTQIA or straight. you can be rich or you can be poor or somewhere in between. you can be black, brown, white or any shade at all. Our first principle is that we affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person. “The Principles are not dogma or doctrine, but rather a guide for those of us who choose to join and participate in Unitarian Universalist religious communities.” 1st Principle: The inherent worth and dignity of every person; 2nd Principle: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations; 3rd Principle: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations; 4th Principle: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning; 5th Principle: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large; 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all; 7th Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. The seven Principles and six Sources of the Unitarian Universalist Association grew out of the grassroots of our communities, were affirmed democratically, and are part of who we are. Read them as they are written in our UUA Bylaws.
