There are probably more than one of course, but the main guy I see most of the time translates for the mayor and the chief of police and the other officials. He's a youngish looking guy...you've probably seen him. Anyway, he's going along translating seemingly effortlessly. Then the police guy said "now we'll have a statement in Spanish...", the Spanish speaker stepped up, and the translator just kept on going translating that Spanish just as effortlessly. wow! To me that's like if I had to translate Spanish into French for a French-speaker. It makes my brain hurt just thinking about it. lol. But of course I'm not fluent in Spanish and this translator is clearly fluent in both Spanish and American Sign Language.

I've watched this guy and I think he's great and grateful that he is assisting.

I'm watching a press conference with him ( well, the mayor) right now. KHOU isn't giving us the best view since the mayor is standing in front of him. I have noticed his facial expressions as well. At first I thought he was mouthing the words, but he wasn't.

youtu.be/f_o-3mJUWH0 Scroll to around 41:00 and the mayor is finishing up a question and the police chief steps to answer a question posed to him in Spanish. That translator doesn't miss a beat.

Your post reminded me of the "fake" interpreter at the Mandela memorial. Remember him? He was waving his arms around and make weird gestures.

Also because he is tall, or the others are short, you can see his hands as well as the speaker.

Also because he is tall, or the others are short, you can see his hands as well as the speaker. "Male interpreters get all the attention!" LOL. Just repeating the rueful claim I've heard for years from several female members of this largely female profession. Yes, revirdsuba99, you're absolutely right: This man is very big, as are his hands, so he and his hands definitely stand out...up. And yes, he's a good interpreter.

It's impressive to be trilingual, and I bet he was hired for that very reason, especially in the Southwest.

Just a note: I meant that the speakers were shorter than the translator.

Slightly off topic I was at Disneyland at a show in the Royal Theater and there were 2 SL interpreters. They were AMAZING! I was drawn to them just as much as the stage actors. They where performing as they signed. So cool!
