This is one of those little annoying things that in the end isn't terribly important. But -- it's making me CRAZY! I have a Macbook. I use Chrome. On my screen I have four or five tabs opened. At the very top of the screen is the little "bar" that has the Apple logo in the far left, then it says "Chrome File Edit View History Bookmarks etc" I also see on that little "bar" (for lack of the real word) my wifi signal (the bars), the battery charge, the clock, etc. Down at the very bottom on the screen is my dock with all the usual icons -- iTune, settings, whatever. Behind and on the edges of the dock I can see my background of the home screen. Also, I have a second monitor hooked up to the laptop where I'm watching "The Man in the High Castle" on Amazon streaming. To get the Amazon window over to that second screen I opened it first on my laptop and then dragged it over to the second monitor. Then I put it on full screen. Just giving you all the exact details before I mention my problem. Problem: The dock will not stay visible on my laptop! While I'm typing this the dock is gone. If I click on the empty space down where the dock ought to be it reappears. But as soon as I click on this site (or Facebook or wherever) the dock disappears again. I have tried putting the window into full screen (which gets rid of that "bar" at the top), then bringing it back to less than full screen. The dock comes back when I do that but doesn't stay. Anyone know what I did and how to fix it? grrr... I think I'd be too embarrassed to go to the Apple store because I'm sure it's such a simple solution. On the other hand it would give my Genius Dude something to talk about in the break room... "Hey guys, you won't BELIEVE what some lady asked me today!!"

Not sure -- have you looked in System Preferences/Dock (Dock on my MacBook is in the top row of the System Preferences icons) to make sure there's no checkmark for __Automatically hide and show the Dock?

My dock doesn't show until I hover over the bottom of the screen. Why would you want your dock showing all the time? Am I misunderstanding something?
ETA - I am re-reading your OP - sounds like you don't have your laptop in full screen because you want your dock to show all the time. What it performing as you wanted it to before, and just suddenly changed?

OP, is your laptop somehow set up as 2nd monitor?

When you are on your home screen (all programs minimized or before you open anything) right click down on the Dock Bar and go to "Dock Preferences" to set your choice to see the dock all the time by unclicking the box next to "Automatically Show Hide Dock"

check Preferences > Dock > see if "automatically hide and show dock" is toggled this is what I was going to say. it's set to "hide" tell it not to under the preferences and it will consistently be there. You can also have it set to display on your left or right.

You can also have it set to display on your left or right. But it's not set to hide. Normally I always see it. Yes I prefer that (for whoever asked upthread...) I did just do the right-click thing and confirmed that it's set to show it always. It's only disappeared since I hooked up the second monitor.

For an extra credit prize how do I tell it get back over here on my laptop? And ugh...now that I did that over on the 2nd monitor I can't get the dock back at all over here on the laptop, not even by clicking on the empty space down on the bottom.

The dock will stay on your main monitor. Switch them by using whichever key on your keyboard does that.

If you go to System Preference > Displays > Arrangement, you can set your primary and secondary monitors.

If you go to System Preference > Displays > Arrangement, you can set your primary and secondary monitors. How do I do that? I mean, I did go into preferences and found display arrangement...I see outlines of the two monitors. But where is the option to set one as primary?
