We got my 8.5 yr old dd a kindle paperwhite during that last kindle sale. She is loving the free time on it. It is password protected, so she can only read what books I put in there for her. It charts her progress, gives her a daily goal, tells her how far past the daily goal she reads and tells her the length of reading each day, and what she averages at each sitting. She he is making a vocab list and loves looking words up, and she loves how,she earns different accomplishments based on how much she's reading. She also likes when we exit her from free time and she gets to browse books. She's a big reader, so she really enjoys the features. She also doesn't have an ipad, so for her this is like her first electronic device that looks like an ipad. She has started carrying a purse so she can carry the kindle around with her. I've told her she can read one book on the kindle and then one book from the library, back and forth (our Cnd library isn't great for ebooks yet), so she keeps burning through the real books so she can read on her kindle. Great purchase with great incentive software. And of course, I wouldn't have known about that kindle sale if it wasn't for the peas . If you were on the fence about giving a young reader a paperwhite I'd go for it, we're really happy with how it's working out. paige.

I hadn't heard about this. Do you think it would be a good incentive for a kid who is NOT a big reader?? I'd do anything to get my DS to read more and enjoy it more.

My dd finds it is great motivation, but she is already motivated.
If a young child doesn't enjoy reading, but likes computers, I would think this is a great incentive. You can also check up on how much he's reading, too. I think that learning how to browse for books your interested in, or learning how to view he books recommended for you, can also help someone who doesn't love to read.
I think it's worth reading up on the paperwhite free time to see if it is worthwhile for him. Keep in mind that the paperwhite free time is different then the kindle fire free time.
Paige.

Unfortunately DS is not that young. He's 14 and this has been a problem, partly because of some learning issues he has. I may have to check this out. If it's too little kid-ish he won't be interested but I think he might like keeping track of things.
