.... and where do you keep it? DD's boyfriend gave her a fish tank and 2 goldfish for her birthday last year. She kept the tank in her room but the sound of the filter keeps her awake at night. A couple of weeks ago we came home from work to find that DD had moved her fish tank out of her bedroom and onto the kitchen bench (ETA: counter top). My nice new renovated kitchen bench. The bench that I had vowed to keep completely clutter free now that I have so much extra storage space in the new kitchen. We told her that she had to move it and she was not happy. Yesterday we had 12 people over for dinner, several of whom hadn't seen our new kitchen yet. Of course I wanted it to look nice. DSO moved the fish tank back into DD's room. When she rang to say that she was going to be late home from work I mentioned to her that we'd moved the fish tank back into her room and that if she didn't want it in her room she would have to get rid of it. Well, you'd think I'd asked her to give up her future first born! She informed me that " everyone has a fish tank on their kitchen bench!" My response was that I don't know one single person who has a fish tank on their kitchen bench. I'm sure there are some such people, but I've never met one. So, any Peas have a fish tank on their kitchen bench? Of course this topic is so important that I added a poll! ETA: Apparently it's not called a kitchen bench in the US - I am referring to the counter top

First off, what is a kitchen bench? This is not a common household item that I'm familiar with that everyone would have in their home.
To answer your question though, I've had fish tanks of various sizes for most of my life. At one point I had 7 set up at one time. They have been everywhere. Family rooms, kitchens, dining room (this is usually where I keep the largest, most eye catching tank), bedroom, dresser top, office, etc.
I'm currently tank less due to my living situation and it sucks.

What is a kitchen bench? We have a fish tank in our home office where my husband works and takes care of him all day long...

I also do not know what a kitchen bench is, but if you're referring to a counter top, I have thought of that. We used to have a fish tank that sat on top of an antique cabinet that had a marble slab top.

Fish are too hard to keep alive IMO. I keep dogs because they let me know when they need to be taken care of. . Perhaps another room in the house would work?

1) what is a kitchen bench? 2) if I happen to unknowingly own a kitchen bench I've never had a fish tank on it since the only fish in the kitchen are being prepped to be eaten.
We have kept fish tanks in bedrooms, living rooms and one house had an odd arrangement of two hallways that met and left a wider corner area so we had one in that hallway corner.

We need another question "Wish we had a fish tank".

Our first tank was on the counter. We had a couple of goldfish and guppies. Lasted forever and had to give them away. Fast forward 10 years and the fish bug bit again. This time we have salt water fish and I have fallen in love with corals and invertebrates (and a snowflake eel). We have a tank with a built-in cabinet to hold filters and all the supplies. It lives in the family room.

We have two fish tanks. One is in my dh's study/office. The other is in ds' bedroom. No fish tanks in the kitchen--not on a bench or counter or anywhere in the kitchen!

Oh then yes, we've had many fish tanks on the kitchen counters over the years. So have some of my friends and family.

Our fish tanks have been in the family room or living room.

Our fish tanks were always in the kids' bedrooms. I do know people who keep fish on the kitchen counter but I would never. Personally, it grosses me out. I don't want pets in my kitchen where I am prepping food.

I don't have one now, but had a large one when my son was little. It was fresh water and we kept it in the family room. Prior to that large one, we have had a couple of different sized ones, also in the family room. The only time there was an aquarium anywhere else in the house was when my son wanted one in his bedroom for his frogs. They were really peaceful to sit and watch when all the lights were out in the room and there was just the soft glow from the tank. It was a very calming thing for my son, and he always wanted to sit there with the lights out after he returned from his dad's house.

I used to have a fish tank about thirty years ago. It is now in the attic and every once in a while I think about setting it up again as I really enjoyed it at the time. Back then, the 70s, I had chocolate brown long shag carpet. I was really into houseplants and my living room looked like a tropical jungle. I had my tank set up and I also had a cockatiel in a natural looking cage that was right next to the fish tank and all of that was surrounded by trees and tropical plants. The bird threw seed all over and it landed in the shag carpet. The fish tank developed a tiny leak, just enough to wet the carpet without being noticed. One day I walked into the living room and had three inch high grass sprouting all over the carpet. That's when I built an outdoor aviary and shut down the fish tank.

Technically we don't have a fish tank right now, but we did for about 6 years after DD won a couple of gold fish at a school carnival. The fish lived in the family room on a side table. There was no way I would have put a tank on the kitchen bench/counter. I need my space and electrical outlets in the kitchen. The only fish in there are ones being prepped for dinner.

We once had a fish tank and it was on the kitchen table. When DD was in 1st grade, she "won" goldfish at the school fair, or rather a certificate to get one from the fish store. I made the mistake of letting her go with her father to get it. They came home with 3 goldfish and an expensive set up for them. So much for free! Most of those free fish die an early death, but not ours. Darn things lived for 5 years and got really big. I gave them to a friend when we went overseas and they lived for another year or two. There will never be another fish tank in this house!

If I had a fish tank it would be no where near the kitchen. I don't think I know anyone with a fish tank.

No fish tank now but we had one growing up and it was in the living room, not on the kitchen bench.

I had fish growing up while I was living at home...it was in my bedroom and no, my mother would not have let me put it on the bench either.

I've had fish tanks and bowls at various times before. Generally, they were all in the family room area except once a child kept a goldfish bowl in his room. I've never had one in the kitchen.

now I take care of the damn fish that refuses to die. lol... Our longest lived fish was a plain old goldfish that the oldest won "free" at a school fair. It lived in one of my kitchen bowls the first week because we were sure it wouldn't live. Three years later (!) it was still in its special fish bowl with several little pieces of scenery that got changed out periodically "so he wouldn't get bored."

We used to have three 10 gallon tanks that stayed in each of our girls' rooms. They loved them. Now as adults, only one has continued with the "fish love." She now has a 30 or 40 gallon tank in her apartment but she keeps it on the bottom shelf of her built-in bookcase next to her fireplace (which she doesn't use). It looks stunning there but not on a kitchen counter.

1. Small pets are kept in the child's bedroom in our house.
2. I'm calling bullshit on the filter keeping her awake. She's had it for a year and I'm guessing has slept during that time? I've also never had a filter that was very loud. If it is loud, maybe it needs replaced?

My girls always loved the sound as it's nice white noise for sleeping.
