I was leaving the health club. I walked out just in front of a couple. I get in my car and pull out (I backed in). I turn to go to my right and what do I see.....
The couple I had walked out just in front of me were walking to their car. The man pulls out a key fob. The car turns on and backs out. NO ONE is in the car....NO ONE. The couple is still walking towards their car.
I sit there as now their unmanned car is in the middle of the lane to pull out. I wait. The dude gets to his passenger door, opens it, then turns around and says "I'm sorry". The wife then gets into her side of the car. They drive away.
So, note to all.....just because a car is moving does not mean anyone is in it. So as you're in the parking lot watch for shopping carts and unattended moving cars!
What kind of car? I don't know. It was white and had a dealer plate.

Wow! I am hard to shock but I'd have been watching that with my mouth hanging open.

I want one. I have no idea what kind of car it is or how it drives. I don't care. I want it.

But you win. I have never seen that before! yikes.... so what happens if you're driving down your aisle like that and someone starts backing their car out without paying attention, and you honk? Does the guy who's controlling the car stop it in time?

Oh wow- how cool would that be to have? I despise backing out and have been driving over 40 years!

Tesla! Yes it does that. Hubby can have it open the garage door, back out, and have it climate control ready for when he gets in.
It can also park itself in parallel. THAT is much more impressive to my mind. DDs Prius can also do that but not with the same finesse

My brother has a Tesla and it will park/unpark itself. It is really cool, but in our state it's still illegal for a car to self-drive, so they don't use that feature. (I think the law is changing soon). The car has a billion safety features to keep it from hitting anything.

So, why back the car out and block traffic? Is this really what the whole self driving car thing is going to be? Creating new ways for people to be self absorbed?

It might of been the Infiniti that is in the link.
I'm just amazed he didn't look. I guess they have to get used to when to have it back out and when they should just get in the old fashioned way and back it out.
I'm now going to watch for it and it's owners!

This early in the game I think people will do it to say *look what my car can do* while inconveniencing the rest of us. To me, if you want to use the feature, you do it when you are at the car. JMHO of course because this heat is making me cranky.

I don't like the idea of this. Technology isn't foolproof or fail safe. I think there should be someone in a moving car that can override the computer controls.

So what happens when it senses another car or a person while it's backing out? Does it just stop and wait for a driver? Does it try to pull back in? How incredibly annoying it will be one day to just have cars coming to a standstill while their sensors try to determine who has the right-of-way in a parking lot.
Not a fan.

An example of technology being allowed to progress too far, IMO. If it were up to me I'd make these cars illegal.

Hmmm, I don't know what to think about this. I probably won't ever have to find out as I can't afford a car with all the fun features anyway, but it would come in handy when someone parked to close to my car and it's hard to get in without my door touching the side of their car.

I am skeptical, but his car is only 5 years old and has several years left in it so who knows what will be available when that time comes.

This is one instance in which I put far more confidence in a computerized machine than human drivers. Human drivers are out killing one another in cars every single day. And yet we still go out and drive around them anyway. And DH----he's taken to stating "I can't wait for automated cars!" every single time someone around us does something really stupid or dangerous. Which means I hear him say that pretty much every time we go anywhere. (Although, in fairness, today it was a cyclist who was being stupid, and that annoyed DH even more because he is also a cyclist and he feels that when one cyclist behaves badly it gives all of them a bad reputation.) It's absolutely heavenly to drive.

Pricey though. We test drove one last week and it's almost $100,000!!! That's a LOT of money for a SUV. Toyota also makes the Prius V which is about a quarter of the cost

The idea of self driving cars makes me nervous. Safety features that can be a back up for a driver? Ok. But the driver needs to be primarily in charge of the car.

I wouldn't worry too much about the cars. look what's coming....... trucks!!! Tesla is developing a long-haul, electric semi-truck that can drive itself and move in "platoons" that automatically follow a lead vehicle, and is getting closer to testing a prototype.

There are an awful lot of poor drivers who would be far better off turning over the control of their cars to a self-driving car. But, I do agree that there will be a lot of growing pains with this new technology that perhaps haven't even been foreseen yet.

I can't wait until all those people texting and driving can just text while their car pays attention and drives safely.

Because no human driving a car ever hit someone or had an accident? No; because having a human in a car is another level of safety. What happens if no one is in the car and the self backing feature malfunctions? Can the technology scan the surrounding area and see potential hazards and be aware of them before they become an issue? Having an extra set of eyes and a brain capable of analytical thought in a self driving car isn't a bad thing.

Images of our dreaded Costco parking lot came to mind! I haven't seen one yet, it must have been a surprise CeeCee! Who was the man talking to when he said, "I'm sorry?"
