We want to take DS on vacation next summer as his HS graduation gift. He's not going off to college, rather taking the Paramedic course (9 months) at the community college. He is currently taking firefighter / emt training in HS. So, he won't need a laptop, briefcase or luggage. He doesn't wear jewelry. So, we thought a family vacation (maybe our last ) would be fun. We're going to research 2 or 3 places that are in our price range then offer him the choice of which he wants. We have been to Virginia Beach and Disney World Florida several times. Those might be options, but looking to add something new in. We've never been to Universal, we don't have any interest in Harry Potter. Is it still worth going and to which areas? I looked on their website and I'm confused! Or any other vacation ideas / places in the US? Thanks!

I took my 19 year old in January of 2016. Our main goal was to hit HP, but we went on almost every ride in both of the Universal parks (some many times) in the five days we were there. The HP rides are fun even if you don't want to spend much time in the parks. You can ride the Hogwarts Express to both parks and save yourself a lot of walking. The other parts of the parks are still fun and made for a more mature audience (minus Dr. Seuss-but we rode some of those rides just for fun). There is a ton to see and I highly recommend staying on the park property and getting in early. You can also leave around lunchtime and go back later in the day. Just for clarification... Universal has two parks at Orlando. Both of them have HP sections, but they also have many other sections with lots of great rides. You can buy tickets that get you into both parks each day. The train takes you from park to park if you bought that ticket.

We enjoyed the rides at universal and had a great time, but depending on how long you are thinking, there isn't so much there for a long vacation. You could add in their water park.

We took our family vacation there earlier this year. It was a great choice for us. I have a 12 year old girl and a 14 year old boy. We stood at the cheapest universal resort, which was fine with us. There was something for each of us, and there were plenty of older teens just hanging out together. I just had no idea how humid it was in Florida during the summer (2nd week of June). That was my fault. I should have researched.

We went the summer before ds' junior year. We stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel, club level and took our time in the parks. We did the HP rides, but didn't spend extra time there. The leisurely pace was nice for repeating rides we liked and not feeling rushed like at Disney. I think we were there for 5 days.

I've been to Universal twice, both times during Disney vacations. Just adults no kids. The rides are great, the water rides are a blast! , I love roller coasters so that is what I judge by. I'm not a Harry Potter fan but the rides are fun. I've heard good things about their new water park. Earlier this year, we took a day from our Disney trip and went to Tampa Bay Busch Gardens. I want to go back! Amazing Coasters! Just another park to think about.

We just went last year and stayed at Hard Rock club level. The club level stinks compared to Disney. We don't think we would do it again but loved the Hard Rock. Only a few minute walk to Universal! Plenty to do in the parks without doing Harry Potter. I am not a Harry Potter fan but hubby is so we went there and I did enjoy it!

So there are 2 parks (not including water park) and you can get tickets to go between the two?
How many days for just the 2 parks should we consider?
Are there other type of rides besides roller coasters and spinning rides? Kids don't like coasters and I can't do spinny rides.
Thanks!

They are connected by the train that you can ride if you have a park hopper pass. You can also do each park individually too. You could easily do a day at each park if you just want to ride a few rides and see the attractions. If you are a fan of HP, it would take longer because both parks have a Harry Potter section that could take you a full day to explore if you LOVED HP. Many of the rides in both parks are roller coasters or spinning rides. You can Google the rides and see what each one does if you Google a site map. There are plenty of attractions and shows to see during the day. The Hard Rock is a seven minute walk to the front gate of Universal Studios. Another 8-10 minute walk will get you to the front of Islands of Adventure. They also have little boats that shuttle you to the front of you don't mind waiting at bit (if you stay on property). They have a ton of food places and you can get a day pass for several meals. The actual Hard Rock restaurant in front of Islands of Adventure and they have really great food and shakes there. It is the largest HR in the world. Connected to both parks is a huge array of stores and restaurants called City Walk. That can offer some fun shopping if you need a break from the rides. We bought 2 days in the 2 parks with unlimited express because that fit our schedule. We were there at peak time and express was a must because the wait for all the popular rides is 2 hours. There are coasters which none of us do, lots of VR rides which we all do OK in although some are spinny, and a few other rides such as water rides which were enjoyed primarily by the children. We enjoyed just the sets too. Im not a big HP fan but the HP themed areas are so well done that I really enjoyed it. Without express I would have wanted 3 days to do all the things we wanted to do. With express we easily did everything in 2. My advice: start at one park and do everything you want to do there, then take Hogwarts Express to the other park. Do what you can in the second park before day's end. Then second day, start in the second park, do everything you want to do there, then take HE the other way and do the rest of that park backwards. We tried to do HE both directions in one day plus see things in both parks, and it was a lot of extra walking and so tiring. That's how we figured out to make a loop one day then reverse it the next. So much easier.

First of all, congrats to him on wanting to take the steps to be an medic and fire fighter. My dh is a FF / Medic and we actually met in the ER where I work. I'm so glad so many schools are now offering EMT training and certification as part of the curriculum. How many kids can say they can start a "certified" career right out of HS these days?
As far as Universal goes, I've only been the HP worlds and we had a BLAST!! I'd go back in a heart beat but I cannot speak about the rest of the areas of Universal. If I were to go back, I would want to do more of the parks but we aren't huge roller coaster people but there were few I'd ride for sure.
Have fun and best of luck to your son!!!

There are a fair number of attractions that aren't coasters or spinny - a lot of "screen" rides where you wear 3D glasses. But I'll be honest, if my kids weren't into Harry Potter or Coasters, I would not choose Universal Studios - what DO they like to do?

Ahhhh - my happy place. DD and I love Universal. I enjoyed it before the Potter lands, and it is a favorite spot now.
My biggest advise is to stay on one of the onsite hotels that offers the unlimited express pass - Hard Rock, Portofino Bay, or Royal Pacific. They are on the pricey side, but it is cheaper than buying the express pass. We usually stay at Royal Pacific since it is usually the cheapest of the three.
Universal is much more compact than Disney - you can park hop, eat lunch at CityWalk, and easily get back to the hotel for a break (or to change clothes after water rides).
If you really want to feel pampered, look at a VIP tour. DD and I have done them in Orlando and Hollywood and love hitting all the highlights with no lines and no thinking - just follow the leader. There are only two of us; I'd have to consider prices more seriously for a bigger crowd.

He will be certified as the highest level of firefighter (and then can go on to specialize in a specific area through other courses when he graduates) and as an EMT. He plans to do the 9 month paramedic course after graduation. He said he loves the idea of this job because "I can really help people, Mom!" God bless your husband! They are amazing people!!

We went a few years back.
Stayed at the Hard Rock and absolutely loved it! Great hotel, and so easy to walk back and forth and rest in between - especially when it was hell hot!
Now, I've got to say for Universal itself? It really wasn't great for our family. We are not the biggest amusement park people - we do live near Cedar Point, and both of our sons will do roller coasters with zero problem. But all four of us found most of the rides really nausea inducing - like BAD. Rather than traditional rides, many of them are 4D experience rides and damn they made us pretty sick. They were impressive, but we were a queasy bunch! We were very interested in the Harry Potter stuff, and it was incredibly impressive.
FWIW!

We are planning a big trip next year (fingers crossed, DH's car is now making a clicking noise and if it's a major repair my vacation fund is going to suddenly disappear). We will spend 3 days at Universal and 3 days/nights on the Disney boat.
Disboards has a small but loyal forum for Universal.
We're purchasing tickets through undercover tourist - they often run a buy 2 day 2 park tickets get a 3rd day free deal which we are going to take advantage of. There is also a AAA discount if you belong, and as we bank through USAA that is what we're using for the hotel. Run the numbers to see what gets you the best deal. We're staying at Royal Pacific for 2 nights just to get express pass b/c we're going at the end of May. I'm hiding the cost from DH. If Express Pass is less of an issue for you, you'll find reasonable hotel rates off property, just keep in mind you'll pay to park on site.
There is quite a bit to do in the Orlando area that isn't park related, restaurants, the Orlando Eye, the NASA space center museum is in the Port Canaveral area about 45 minutes away, We'll spend the night before getting on the boat in Coco Beach because beach time.
if you don't want to go in the summer and you're horror fans they do Halloween Horror Nights starting about now and through Halloween. Separate ticketed event, that's a big draw.
I've learned a lot just by reading trip reports on the DIS. Have fun!

All great suggestions listed above regarding Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure...what I didn't read anyone mention was one of the best shows there is Blue Man Group....it's an additional charge but the show is fantastic!
As a resident of Orlando, we've gone several times just for an evening out and we always have a blast!!
