For years I have been wanting to learn Spanish through Rosetta Stone. Is that the best resource? Are there free resources online that are any good?

When you say learn it do you mean speak or speak, write and read?
If you just want to speak it then my suggestion is Pimsleur. You can select both Spanish (Latin American) or Spanish (European/Castilian). The lessons are expensive but, your library might have a set.
If you want to read and write then I'd take a class.

I like the idea of duolingo because you can devote as much or as little time as you wish to it anytime you want. And it's free. then, when you have exhausted what it can teach you, you can use that as a nice base if you then want to take a class to learn more.

My library offers Mango free to cardholders--it's online and has lots of languages to choose from, and you can't beat free!

I have yet to find a single app or programme that covers all of my needs. So, I use a combination - Rosetta Stone (if cost isn't an issue, I recommend it over duolingo), Quizlet to create study sets, SpanishDict.com to explain why things are the way they are (imperfect subjunctive+conditional ), and studyspanish.com for verb drills. I also have a father who is fluent and is a bit of a 'grammarist' so, if I can't find an answer online, he'll have it.

Duolingo is the reason I randomly cry out "Yo soy pinguino!"

Thanks! I am going to use duolingo for the time being and possibly take an online class through our community college during the summer. Or do Rosetta Stone.
