DH and I have several different financial things going on. We are at a point where we are going to have to make some changes because of some things that have happened. We need someone who can advise us on the options we have and the best route to take. I have googled financial planners in our area but what comes up is more of retirement planning which isn't what we need right now. Do financial planners also do what I'm looking for?
ETA: I don't want to post on FaceBook looking for suggestions, too many people are nosy! lol We live in a small town so I don't want someone extremely local.

Financial advisors do focus a bit on investing and retirement planning but they do other things as well. Not sure what you situation is but you may also check into a Credit Counseling Service. I would call the advisor first and explain your needs and see if they can help. If not, then call the counseling service.
I'm sorry you have financial issues you are dealing with. I hope you find someone to help you make the changes you need.

Our credit union has free financial services available for members. I'd check what your bank or credit union has to offer.

Do you have someone prepare your taxes for you? Maybe they could help or point you in the direction of the right person/company?

Our accountant would be the first person I'd check with regarding financial matters. If it didn't fall within his area of expertise, he would be able to refer me to someone who could handle the problem. If you don't have a regular accountant, you might try calling an out of town firm and asking if this is something they handle or if they could refer you to someone.
I'm sorry you're going thru difficulties.

The most inexpensive approach is to contact your financial institution. A financial/wealth planner likely has an office in your local branch (& adjacent towns/cities, if you prefer), & their advice is free to established customers. Note their recommendations are often limited to products/services offered by their employer.
Your accountant should be able to recommend a local certified financial planner. You likely will pay an hourly rate for appointments.

I would also check for some financial self help books at the library.
Sorry things got tough, but congrats on jumping in to figure it out.

As someone who worked in banking for many years, I would not advise you to go the route of the financial advisers at banks. I would look for a Certified Financial Planner in your area. They may not advertise to do the kinds of services you are looking for, as that's not generally what CFP's bread and butter is, but call a few and tell them what you need. Someone will be able to help.
