Get really good tires on the Kia before u decide to buy a new car. Good tires improved my Kia souls performance in the snow (although my next car will be Subaru) I bought it in December and it was pretty crappy then too. :/

I recommend that got look into Blizzack tires rather than studs for winter. We have them on all our cars. They are amazing for stopping. From the land of ice and snow - Alaska.

AWD Forester. When we lived in the Syracuse New York area, also known as the snowiest city in the US, it drove beautifully. I live in Syracuse. When it starts to snow, the Hyundai Sonata goes in the garage and the Subaru Outback comes out. I feel extremely safe while driving it.

I got a Dodge Durango to go back and forth between CT and Northern VT. Wanted a Jeep grand Cherokee but it didn't quite have enough room for 3-4 adults, 2 dogs and all our stuff. Found out the the Durango is essentially an extended (longer) Grand Cherokee. Got the V8 R/T model and love it!! Fantastic in our long snowy VT driveway and great during mud season. Even better that I can buy a lifetime warranty (only available on Chrysler products). I plan to drive it until it falls apart....

I'm in Southeatern Ohio. We have an all wheel drive Honda CR-V and a 4 wheel drive Pilot. Both have been great, snow or mud. The ice is usually the worst and both have done well with it. They can even make it up our half mile drive that is all up hill

Thank you so much, Ive got him looking at some options. I'm looking for something primarily to drive in bad weather/crazy driveways only, not really to replace either of the current vehicles so I'm looking for something used and don't need much that is fancy. I've been looking at Subaru as an option so i"m happy to hear some great reviews. I don't need a ton of space, just a couple of bags and a kid here and there but this won't really be a family car often. Hoping this is a process where he just goes and buys something and I don't have to worry about it much but I feel like that's not going to be the case.

I have a serious love affair with my Ford F-150 Lariat ... it can go through anything and looks really sharp too because it's black

Currently I have a Ford Explorer - we bought it used last Summer so have only driven it 1 winter season so far, but I love it. I've missed being in a truck after 10 years of driving my Ford Focus. I do have my heart set on a Subaru Outback when it's time for something new

Any heavy AWD will work. I'd go with a Jeep or other SUV because trucks often need to be weighted in back.
I'm awesome at driving in the snow because I've had cars that are horrible in it. Switching over to DH's Jeep was like a dream.

We were headed to a retreat in the mountains years ago. We had a caravan of over 30 vehicles. I was in my friend's Subaru outback. We zipped past all of the other struggling vehicles. Some got stuck and some made it later, but her Subaru rocked.

Lincoln MKX or Lincoln MKT. All wheel drive and good tires are a must, but as a Minnesotan living in a semi-rural area, I know what I'm talking about when it comes to winter!

AWD Subaru Outback or Forester. They are very popular in Maine, which everyone knows only has three seasons: Summer, Winter, and Mud. I've been looking at these. We are in northern Michigan. I have worried that AWD wouldn't be enough (dh's truck is 4-wheel drive). I've seen a lot of these around though. I'm very happy to hear that they do well in snow.

Another vote for a Subie. My Forester and Crosstrek handle bad weather, rough roads, etc. without blinking - and even DH says they're better at that stuff than his 4wd truck. Just purchased a Subaru Crosstrek. My daughter bought one last fall & it was a beast in the snow. It out drove our Expedition & Land Rover. I was so impressed with her car that I just had to get one!

We lived in New Hampshire for about a year and practically everyone drove an AWD Subaru of some sort. We were <this> close to buying one then got relocated back home to the South. I still think they are great cars for the snow-y conditions.
You could always try tire chains.

Jeep Trailhawk! We had an ice storm last December that hit us before the roads could be treated. All kinds of vehicles were having trouble getting up the hills but my Trailhawk had no problem making it up.

We put Bridgestone Blizzaks on our Subaru Legacy the first winter we had it. DH renamed the 'passing lane' on the freeway the Subaru lane, because more often than not, in the bad snow fall mornings he was the one making the lane, since it wasn't usually plowed yet. We just bought a set for my Outback and I cant wait for the first snow fall (well I can... but... )

Please don't say "Bless your heart" unless you mean it (it's not a southern negative context phrase. Some of us really mean it when we say it to show empathy). The "Slangin' vibrators" comment was NASTY and RUDE. Says a lot about the person that posted it.

The Ford Expedition. I've had two. By far the most comfortable and nicest vehicle in weather. Horrible on gas consumption though. But still, it's the vehicle for my Zombie bug out plan. 😂

Have been for at least 40 years - and we still have the worst roads of any state!

I drive a Nissan Xterra for our Canadian winters. It's 10 years old this year. Never ever have I gotten stuck in snow and we do get some really heavy snowfall. Plenty of years when bussing was cancelled because of the heavy snowfall, I would drive the kids to school. There would be only be maybe 3-4 other kids in their classes who made it in to school that day as well. I like to assume their parents drive Xterras as well.
Every year I try to find the deepest snow to drive through just to see if I would get stuck. Never have. Going up hills and vehicles ahead of me are stuck, tires spinning, and starting to slide back down the hill...not me, cruise on by.

I have an F150 as my back up winter vehicle. I drove a couple jeeps before that and before that I had a neon (front wheel drive). That neon could go through anything! Front wheel drive if you get a car. Invest in good tires.
