I was considering looking at them right before news of the carbon monoxide issues arose. I was just looking around trying to get some info and a lot of the info is based on the explorers used for police departments. Some info made it seem like it was just the modified explorers for the police departments involved.
Pretty sure that it's an explorer problem in general. Does anyone know for sure or have more info on what they are doing about it at this point?

I've heard it's the just the Interceptor because of the modifications that put holes in the underbody that weren't sealed.

That's what I was seeing a lot of yesterday, but there was little bits and pieces here and there that possibly indicate a more widespread problem. Figured we must have a few explorer owners amongst us who would definitely be following this more closely.

I got a new Ford Explorer in 1999 I drove it for 10 years my son took it to Virginia Tech for 5 years and now we use it to go to the dog park ,Lowe’s and bring stuff to the dump and if you don’t look too close it still looks pretty good . I don’t know about that potential problem with carbon monoxide but I believe that the explorer is a great car .

They say it's just in the Police Interceptor models, but I'm not buying it. Mine is a 2012, and I've experienced some cabin/exhaust odors. It is mostly when accelerating hard (like on an on-ramp into traffic) and when the outside air vents are closed. There's been documentation on this, but Ford is not recognizing it as a "known problem" except for the police models. And of course, now it's out of warranty. The makes involved are from 2011-2017 it says. 2011 was when the new body style was introduced, so there obviously is some type of design flaw. My old Explorer (which DH drives now) is a 2002, the older body style, and no issues in that regard.

I have a 2016 Explorer, and had a 2012 before that - they always smell funny inside after about 15,000 miles - like kind of dank and stale. I turn off the air recirculator when I drive so it's getting fresh air from outside, but yeah. They are a car that has some weird problems. There's another thread right now asking about the best cars for snow: that's why I drive it - it handles great and feels safe in lots of difficult road conditions. It's just that pesky concern about CO2 poisoning while driving, you know, nothing major.

We had an explorer back in the late 90s. We had nothing but problems with it. Bought it new and sold it within 3 or 4 years when we continued to have brake issues. We might have had a lemon, or they might have improved - but I'm not a fan.

I had the first model Explorer and had 5 recalls the first year. I won't buy a Ford anymore. Darcy Collins we must have had the same batch as you did.

There was a recall on this model, the starter I think and mine failed within about 2 weeks of the recall notice, which I never received. I wouldn't buy this car personally, but it's my work vehicle. I have the option to purchase it at the end of each lease, and we've always passed on it.
