I requested this from USA peas, as I know many countries don’t tip at all, but feel free to comment with your opinion, no matter where you live. I always tip minimum 20% at restaurants. (Unless the waitstaff is absurdly rude or disappears with any real service...then I’ll probably still tip something but never return to the restaurant) But for Sonic or other fast food places with carhops, do you tip? To me, they are fast food employees just like McDonalds or Wendy’s, so I don’t tip. However, my mother insists on tipping, which is nice of her, but she always says something to me when I don’t tip. Should I be tipping carhops?

If I am paying with cash, I might tell them to keep the change, but I use my card 99% of the time, and their receipt doesn't have a tip line (so the restaurant isn't encouraging a tip).

No we don't tip at Sonic. All the person does is deliver our food. The employees never linger as if waiting for a tip either.

we usually do tip at Sonic but I've never gotten the impression that they're expecting to be tipped - more surprised gratitude

I also just give them the coin change I have coming. The carhops where I frequent are usually college kids who appreciate anything they are given. A girl my DD knew said she got more in tips than she did in salary.

Honestly, even at Sonic, I usually just go through the drive-thru. The couple of times they've delivered to my car, I gave them a buck or two as a tip.
Our A&W's are just regular drive-thrus/dining rooms like other fast food places. No car service.

The only place I know of with carhops is Sonic. I rarely go there, but if I did I would tip if i parked my car.

No, I don't tip at fast food.
Tipping is out of control in this country. IMO people don't want to do the job that they get a wage for and want customers to supplement their wages. Sorry.
I tip when I get my hair cut and when I go out to eat at a sit down restaurant. Or if I use valet parking. And then I tip 20%.

No. If I do, it's because it's bad weather, and I feel bad that they have to go outside.

LOL. i didn't know there were still such things. that's funny. i guess if i was served by one, i would tip them like they were regular servers.

The few times we ever go to Sonic, I do tip $1 or $2. I figure these car hops might be students and they might appreciate the money. My ds worked at a restaurant that is order at the counter and deliver to table. It's not fast food and a little more upscale, but isn't a sit down menu place. His tips meant a lot to him and really helped him to build a nice savings account. If you can afford it and your barista or food server is friendly and efficient then why not help out a hard working young person?

(Unless the waitstaff is absurdly rude or disappears with any real service...then I’ll probably still tip something but never return to the restaurant) I've heard this before, but never understood it: if the service is bad, especially the service of the one getting the tip, why would you still leave a good tip but never come back? That's like rewarding the behavior/service even though it's bad, but seems passive-aggressive in that they are never going to know why you didn't come back?? Why not complain, tip a lower amount (it at all), and then expect better service next time as a result? I know that wouldn't apply if the tip needed to be split between several team members, but this thought process has always confused me? As for Sonic, I always tip there. It's probably because when I was growing up, there were several little local car-hop places in our town with servers on skates, and my parents always tipped. I consider myself a good tipper, and even though I realize Sonic doesn't expect tipping, it's fun to see the carhops get tickled at a dollar or two when that doesn't make or break me. I go there regularly for their dollar happy hour large Cokes, and usually pay $2.00 for the $1.07 bill. Now, if I go when it's regular price, and that same Coke is $2.49, I'm less generous and hand them $3.00 to keep the change from. Again, not breaking the bank, but now that I always tip there, it would seem weird to drive away and not tip. Hijack: when I was out to eat with a friend recently, her food had to be sent back twice. They comped her whole meal, including BOTH of her margaritas, which were perfectly fine. She left the table and mentioned to me as we were walking out that she didn't leave a tip because her ticket showed $0.00 due. I was mortified, and walked back over to the table and dropped a $5 on it on her behalf.

I don't want to perpetuate a tipping society when tipping is already out of control. I tip at sit down restaurants and tip is directly related to service. I feel zero obligation to tip at all. If the server is good I'll tip 20%. If the server is not good I feel no guilt leaving less or even none. I will tip for personal services (pedicure, massage), again IF the service is good and I like the work. Other than that, nope.

I have always tipped 20% at Sonic, but I'm not sure why! I think from here out I'll tip $2 maybe, but that's it.
I think I relate them to the other drive in we have and that's why I tip. But at Sonic, they bring your food in a bag but don't even collect the trash. At the other drive in (you can sit in the car or they have tables as well), they bring the food and collect the trash / tray / check on if you need anything else. I see that as being waited on.

Always tip at sonic, usually a dollar. Sometimes, it's super hot for them and I feel bad and tip also when I have a large order.

I always tip at Sonic. Those people have to leave the building every two minutes to bring it to my car. Some days they are out in negative degree weather. It is the one place I actually overtip and often give a 100% tip for a $2-$4 order. They are always so appreciative.

I was a carhop back in the 70's. The restaurant pAid me the same wage as the waitresses inside. In other words, far less than minimum wage. I took the orders, made their shakes, dressed their sandwiches, carried food out and cleaned up after. Mmthere were 40 car slots and one car hop.... Let's just say I was kept hopping. Some people tipped, especially my regulars. Others did not. Needless to say, the inside waitresses definitely preferred the money they made inside.

Yes, I tip at Sonic. DH and I had a talk about it just this week because we paid with my card and I pulled out 4 quarters to tip with, but DH refused to give it to the girl. He said "it would be a slap in the face". He felt that giving change instead of a bill is rude. I disagree. She could have walked right back in and exchanged the quarters for a bill if she'd wanted to. I worked at Sonic when I was 15 and was VERY grateful for the tips.

I don't tip at sonic because I figure they are making minimum wage and not a small restaurant wage where they are expecting tips. I'm cheap and not going to tip $1 when I usually only buy 1 or 2 drinks during happy hour.

I usually go to Sonic for drinks with the kids and their friends. The most has been 7 kids, so 8 drinks. Yes, I tip especially if they smile.

Jennifer I think the car hops at Sonic are generally nice, friendly people (as compared to most fast food). I don't tip if I go through the drive through, but car hops, yes.
