Hi all, I'm looking for places to stay in San Diego. We will be doing a family trip to celebrate my mom's 80th birthday and my twin and I turning 50. The group will be 80 year old mom, two 50 year old couples, 25 yr old, 21 yr old, 15 yr old and 3 year old. Need four rooms probably. Will be mid June 2018.
Price point is below the Coranado. Looking at the Catamaran but worried that the reviews are saying the rooms are very dated. Would like to be near the water but open to other ideas, especially if golf is available. A house could work or hotels. Any favorites? Anyone recently stayed at the Catamaran?
We will be doing the zoo and hanging out with local family in Spring Valley. Would also love restaurant ideas, especially favorite Mexican and Italian that work work for a group of up to 16 or so. Thanks so much!

We like to stay in the Hacienda Hotel in Old Town. It's a Best Western but their higher end hotels. We like that everything is within walking distance, You walk through the hotel gate and you are right in the middle of restaurants and shops.

We stayed in an awesome condo right on the beach. It was the only building over 2 stories where we were and was very nice. You might have to get 2 condos, but there were plenty there.
I'll see if I can find the name of the place. I think I found it on vrbo and it was about 7 years ago

Our in-laws stayed there once and it was right on the beach but high up so there was a nice view. The units are owned by different people so ymmv there.

We were in a corner condo, I think and pretty high, but not the top floor.

I have heard good things about the Catamaran and the Dana Inn on Mission Bay. They're very popular with families.
A fantastic location if you prefer beach instead of the bay is La Jolla Shores Inn, which used to be the Sea Lodge. The restaurant there is very good and you can walk to many excellent restaurants nearby. It's located about 5 miles from the Torrey Pines golf course. I haven't seen the rooms but I've attended events there and love that beach.
I would recommend TripAdvisor for more ideas.

Check out airbnb, there are great options. I'm staying in one in San Diego as I type this for a friend's bachelorette party. It sleeps 7 and it is very reasonably priced.

We have been to San Diego many times and have used Airbnb for every stay. We typically stay north a bit because we prefer it but there are even more rentals in the city. I can easily find 3 bedrooms but when I needed 4 it really bumped us to another price category. There were homes available but typically a $100-$200 more a night or some even more.
Having said that I would never go in June again. We went this year in June and we learned about June gloom. It had a serious damper on our trip. the sunsets we loved weren't the same, we desired a few beach days and when we saw temps were in the 70's we thought we would be safe. The clouds and wind made it feel so much cooler. Perhaps sunsets and beach days aren't your thing but just beware that the June gloom is a very real thing. We were there for 10 days and had probably 2-3 times of sunshine. Not 2-3 days of sunshine but where we had it for a couple hours each time. We love San Diego but won't be going back around that same time.
I am going to go peek on Airbnb and see what I can find. So much is dependent on dates and many Airbnb's don't open up the dates that far out but some do. There is one rental we want to stay at in Monterey, CA and we would have to book 7-8 months out just to get it on a weekend. We have visited Monterey area before and there are other great rentals but one day we hope to be able to book this one. Actually now that I think of it this rental is in Carmel.

I was at Catamaran in July. It is good for families but yes, the rooms are very dated. Check out Paradise Point on Mission Bay. Their bungalows are great for families.

I just though of another hotel we really liked. It's in Mission Beach, right on the beach. Surfer Beach Hotel

I think that is where one of my friends just stayed for the weekend. She loved the bungalows. They were going to move them into the main building but they actually preferred the bungalows.
