I have two lifelong friends. I have known one since I was four and the other since I was fifteen. I’m 62 now, so that’s a long time! I am a pack rat about some things, and when we moved recently, I came across a box containing letters from both of them, stretching from childhood to middle age, when we pretty much switched over to email for communication. I had this bright (?) idea to make a scrapbook for each of them with copies of some of their letters, interspersed with pictures of them when they were the ages at which the letters were written. I’m not sure I’m being clear - they don’t know each other, so this would be two completely separate projects.
Would you enjoy seeing something like this about yourself, or would you wish the letters you wrote so long ago had disappeared into the mists of time? There is nothing awful in the letters, like teenage sex/drugs/violence, just experiences, mild gripes about parents (now all deceased), occasional gripes about other people we knew, boys they had crushes on, hopes, dreams, early married life, birth of children, jobs, etc.
Is this a crazy idea?

I love that you have had friends for so long! What a treasure!
Yes, I would love a scrapbook like that. I do tend to be more sentimental though. I say go for it!

I would love it and think that is an amazing idea! Maybe tuck the notes into a pocket so if they aren't shareable, they're not immediately visible. I know I wrote some things when I was younger ,and used some language, that I wouldn't want everyone reading

It shows your care for them that you have the photos AND the letters. I would suggest that you keep the letters, but take photos of or copy the excerpts you think go best with each photo. That way it is like they did their own journaling, but you get to keep the original letters.

I would accept it graciously and with enthusiasm but I'm not one for looking through things from the past so I would probably just tuck it away. I would appreciate the gesture though.

Cute idea. My husband and I actually still have the pen pal letters we wrote to each other 25 years ago (holy sh*t I'm old). I enjoy reading my old letters to him now and then.
If you have them do include pictures of you and your friend. And perhaps leave space for them to add your letters if they still have them.
Congratulations on having two beautiful friendships that you wish to celebrate in this way.

I'm not sure I would or not. My 1st thought would probably be wondering why you kept all those letters? I'd say only you know your friends and how sentimental they are or aren't so my opinion shouldn't matter.

Thanks everybody for the feedback and suggestions! I think I will forge ahead and see how it goes.
Amom23, I suppose I kept the letters because they meant something to me, and still do. I don't keep a lot of stuff, but in the same box I also found some letters from my grandmother, and my mother, who died when I was 30. Just seeing their handwriting made me cry. Guess I'm just sentimental, haha!
Thanks again!

I would love a scrapbook like that. It would be fun to look back at all the "anguish" and good times. You are a true friend to have kept the letters all this time.

Yes, it is a lovely idea! I would consider that their children or family members may get into them as well, so edit accordingly. What a neat memory to have of growing up over the years.

Definitely do it!!! I would love to receive such a gift. Years ago after my grandparents passed, my cousin sorted through all the cards and letters my grandparents had kept over the years and sent them back to the writer. So fun to read those old letters. Snapshots in time.

I would absolutely love it! I lost so much memorabilia a few years ago due to a fire(at the beautiful climate-controlled storage park), so this gift would really be a treasure!
