Dh and I are going for a long weekend and it's been 15 years since I've been there at least. I made a dinner reservation for Brennan's but is it better for brunch? Also, we want local flavor so can anyone recommend must visit restaurants?

We love Central Market, Bon Ton Cafe, Camellia's and Mothers for local flavor.

If you like Bloody Mary's, Daisy's has a very tasty bottomless Bloody Mary. We ate a leisurely brunch (nothing fancy, but reasonably priced), had multiple refills and then got one final one in a go cup. Then we wandered around & had a great afternoon. I felt like it was one of the best deals in the city.

Cafe Fleur de Lis on Chartres is very good for breakfast if you're willing to wait for a table.

Commander's Palace in the Garden District was always one of my favorites. We went to Brennan's for brunch.

Celebrated my birthday with lunch at Commander's Palace last December. We were seated in a garden-y glassed in room upstairs surrounded by venerable live oaks. All the food was wonderful; the gumbo was sublime. Service was exquisite. Highly recommend. Acme Oyster House for oysters and seafood. Casual. A wait so have a drink in the street while you're waiting. We pretty much had a wait everywhere we didn't have reservations so lots of drinking in the street. Used to live in New Orleans so took a trip down memory lane and took the trolley uptown through the Garden District to have a late lunch at Camellia Grill, perennial favorite of Tulane students for breakfast food and burgers. Jimmy J's for brunch. Small place so long wait but good food/bloody marys.

You have to have beignets and coffee one morning at the French Market Cafe Du Monde (the other locations are not the same). Commander's Palace in the Garden District was always one of my favorites. We went to Brennan's for brunch. Commander's Palance is my mom's favorite as well. She always gets the turtle soup and then calls to tell me about it.

Commander’s Palace is our favorite in NOLA from our time living there. Other favorites are Mr. B’s Bistro and Camellia Grill. We always did brunch at Brennan’s. Enjoy your visit there!

I was just there last week. We had brunch at Angeline's and the shrimp and grits and mimosas were good. It's also kind of off the beaten path a bit so maybe not as crowded. We had dinner at Peche one night and I was disappointed. To me, the dishes were too busy--like the chef was trying too hard. I got a smoked lamb dish and the smoke flavor completely overpowered everything else. The shrimp bisque starter was delicious, though. That said, it was packed, so a lot of people must like it.
We also ate at Grand Isle something (?) and it was delicious. I recommend the fisherman's stew for lots of yummy seafood. When we go to NOLA again, I'd make a point to go back there.
We had reservations at Brennan's for brunch on our last day, but we ended up canceling and getting room service from Compere Lapin instead. The banana bread with cinnamon butter was to die for!!! It was also always packed (it's in a hotel and we stayed there) and we actually couldn't get a reservation but could order from room service.
Have a fun trip! I love New Orleans. Such a great foodie town!

Camellia grill for breakfast and socializing.
Mother's for as many meals as you can handle.
Yo mama's for a peanut butter burger amd a really cool atmosphere. Ferdi special or a biscuit with debris is my jam.
Desire on bourbon for the best BBQ shrimp in the world and great people watching. I literally sop up the sauce with whatever I can.
The gumbo shop for gumbo and they have really yummy vegan options and bread pudding.
Cafe reconcile for a great mission and new orleans soul food that is just as good.
Refuel for a lighter breakfast and the best grits I've ever had.
La petite grocery- I think it was crab beignets. Crayfish maybe? I don't know, I didn't even care. I know the first bite literally made me moan.

Yo Mama's closed a year or so ago. We were very disappointed to see that when we were there between Christmas & New Year. There's another restaurant/bar there now called Port St Peter. Looks like similar menu but we haven't eaten there since the change and it gets mixed reviews on how it compares to Yo Mama's.

Definitely Mothers! We also like The Original French Market, Coops Place and Desire (for the BBQ oysters). If it's just the 2 of you, sit at the bar wherever they have oyster shuckers working. They can be very entertaining if you strike up a conversation.
Do a walking food tour. It's a great way to taste a little bit of many things, and give you some ideas of where to go for a full meal. Have fun!

Absolutely worth it! And if you plan it toward the beginning of the trip, you might taste at a place that you decide to visit for a meal later. Or even get some good "off-tour" suggestions for other places. New Orleans Culinary History Tours is the company we used. We went on the French Quarter History & Tasting Tour. Our tour guide was Naif and he was excellent! I remember his name because his motto is "You're safe with Naif" (really...google it and you'll come up with lots of reviews mentioning him)
