I would love to pick your brains about the Galaxy S7 or S7 edge. I've been a galaxy girl since before they called the first one a galaxy (even though it said galaxy on the phone, they called it something else). I've had that first one, the 3 and the 5. I LOVE my galaxy phones. However, I've had recurring phone related issues with them and am not sure if I just have really crappy luck or what. My 3 would only send through about half of my calls (I could have my husband call me standing right beside me and it would go to VM without ever ringing on my end) and my 5 requires the use of the a bluetooth in order for the person on the other line to hear me (I can hear them just fine but I always sound like I'm breaking up to them). I'm on Sprint and am not sure if that is part of the problem because my husband has an unlocked 5 (verizon) that he uses for his tracfone and he has none of the issues that I have. All that aside, I really like my galaxy phones. I will not upgrade to the 6 even though the prices are better because of the lack of an sd card slot. I'm trying to see if there is a justification to spend the extra on the 8 or if the 7 is as good as people said it was when it was launched. In addition to other issues forcing me to look into a new phone, I'm constantly having to clear my cache memory in order to have enough room for app updates and such (16gb built in) so I'm thinking the 32gb in the 7 should be enough, but still, I would love to hear what others think!!

I have the S7 and have been very happy with it. I have never had trouble with calls not going through but I'm with Verizon. I had a Samsung Fascinate which I think was one of the first Galaxies. DS just bought the S8 and likes it so far. He had a Note4 previously and I believe there is a class action lawsuit about it.

I went from the 5 to the 8 this past spring because my 5 was getting elderly and slow at 3 years old. I never had any problems with calls but I was running out of room for updated apps and I increasingly had to restart the phone because it would freeze up.
It's all what you're used to. DH (and DS) has had an iPhone for years while I've had androids, Samsung Galaxy, S3, S5 in particular the last several years while DD had the S4 & S6. We've all had issues as the phones aged. DH/DS prefer their iPhones, DD and I prefer android.
I'm in love with my S8 but I don't expect any phone to get more than 2-3 years good use, though yours might limp along. I'm quite sure this is by design by all manufacturers. I've had a cell phone since I think 1999 and this has always been the pattern, especially since the rise of smart phones.
Here is where someone will come in and tell me their S3 still works just fine but I want my phone to be super fast and reliable and I live on this thing so I need it to perform functionally.

I've had my S7 Edge for over a year now. I don't have any of the call issues that you talked about (I'm on TMobile).
I just did a comparison on the S8's and honestly, they aren't that different than the S7/S7 Edge. I have new-phone envy, but because there isn't much difference, I'm going to keep my S7 for awhile - probably until the S9's come out. Then I'll upgrade to something, just not sure if it'll be the S8 or S9 (or maybe Note8).
If you're going to the S7, I would get the Edge though. I do love it! The best feature (for me) is having the edge have the time lit up (very low light) during specific hours (I go 9pm to 6am) so I can see the time at night if I wake up. But it's not bright at all so it won't keep you awake, etc.

I love my S7. I bought it unlocked and use it with AT&T (via straight talk). No problems with calls or anything but it gets pretty hot with some apps. Battery life is better than my old phone (Nexus 5). This is my first non rooted phone since my first smartphone and I'm fine with the stock version.
eta: this is also the first phone I've had where I didn't want to upgrade after a year. I've had it for just over a year now and have no plans to upgrade for at least a couple more years.

I have always had Galaxy phones. I currently have the S7. I've never had any problems. I have AT&T. Sprint sucked.

Personally I would go for the newest model, only because it will have longer support (more android os updates which means more support for apps when they are updated). I got my s8 for less than $600, I'm not sure what the s7s are going for but unless it is a lot less expensive, I would go for the s8.

What she said, except my 5 did have issues with calls (as well as apps and texting), and I don't have a family. I haven't gotten more than two to three years out of a phone since my first smartphone.

I have an s5 still going strong after 3 years. 16GB of memory is definitely not enough though. If the prices of the 7 and 8 are pretty comparable, I would spring for the 8, because that technology will be the most up to date. If the 8 is a lot more, then I would just get the 7.

I agree that the service isn't great, but I have a friend that works there and I get my unlimited service for $45 or so per month through her. I can use my phone's service all month long and go through gigs and gigs of data without worry and that's a huge plus because that's what I use my phone for 99% of the time: the internet and apps.

The s8 (plus, too) had a ton of ebay listings last night for $500-$550 but they're all gone this morning...I didn't realize those were fluke listings and would sell so fast until this morning when the listings were all $650+. I've never upgraded and spent more than $150 on a phone because I always reupped my contract...this contract free crap and forcing you to pay for a phone is all new to me and I'm definitely NOT a fan because I pay less for computers and 60" TV's (GOOD ones, too) than I'll be spending on a new phone.

I've had my SG7 since it first came out last year, so July/August I think. I love it. I upgraded from a 4. I have not had any issues at all. I have Verizon. I got the 32GB model, and I added a 64GB micro SD that stores all photos, music, books, etc.
I'm trying to talk DH into upgrading. He has the 5 that has the stupid charging plug that is a uni-takser. My 7 cord fits my kindle, my portable speaker, and my tablet.

I used to have an S3 for work, and it still worked, but was getting kind of buggy. I have an S7 for my personal phone, and while I like it, I probably should have gotten the S7 edge. I started out with the Note 7, so the S7 was a replacement for that when I had to quit using it.
I have been having battery issues lately - haven't figured that one out yet.

I'll see if they support Sprint and if they have anything I'm looking for. Thank you for the suggestions. It annoyed me that Best Buy has the same phone for Verizon on monthly installments for $15/mo but the same phone for Sprint is $25/mo!!

You're the second comment to suggest the edge. Is there really that much of a difference between the 2? Most of the listing I see are for the edge (in fact, I don't know if I've seen any for the regular 7) but I included both just because I didn't think there was a huge difference between them (except maybe hard drive options).

i'm a samsung girl at heart
i switched to an iphone we had laying around just to see what the hype was
i went from a S6 to an iphone 6
i will be going back to my S6
the only benefit for the iphone is facetime - and i can use FB video for that
this phone isn't any easier to use
if i were debating between a 7 and a 7 edge
i'd forgo the edge - just because i'm sure i'd crack the screen with it going all the way around
and if you put a case on it...it negates the extra screened edge

I've had the 4, 6 and 8. My DD has the 7 (other DD has my old 6). The 4 is dead now. I had it for 3.5 years and DD#1 had it for 1 year before it kept glitching out. I wouldn't get the 6 since it is 2 generations old already and of course has the non expandable memory you mentioned. The can put an SD card in both the 7 or the 8. The 8 is an edge, it's scary to have that exposed edge, I've never been one to have an Otterbox style case and I don't see the beauty in the display on the edge. I do like the big screen. I've never really had too many issues with service as long as I have it, we do live in a fairly rural area. Either everyone has service or no one does - no matter the brand of phone. Either phone wouldn't cost anything here as long as you were one a 2 year contract the cost would just deduct each month. And I've been with my crappy service provider for probably 17 years so I'm not leaving now. They are our only choice. So I'd go with the 8 iphones cost an arm and leg, even the old version, upfront though geesh! Another reason to be a Samsung/Android person.
