So, last week, out of the blue, DS was stopped in the hall by the volleyball coach who asked him to try out for the team. DS had never met the coach before, isn't a jock, and other than in a few gym classes in middle school, had never played volleyball in his life. He told me he didn't have anything better to do after school so, why not?
Apparently being really tall and having the wingspan of a pterodactyl is more important than experience because he's now first-string middle blocker. So, my question - kneepads, what the hell am I looking for?

No idea on the knee pads, but I hope he has a good experience!

If you go to a store like Sportchek or something like that and tell them what you are looking for, they will point you in the right direction!
I always need to do that for school sport stuff (because I'm SO not a sports gal!)

I was a volleyball mom and loved every minute of it, and I hope you and your son will too.
If you go to Dick's or a similar sporting goods store they can help you with picking out knee pads. There's really not a whole lot of variation, at least that was the case when my daughter was playing.

When I first mentioned knee pads, DS said, "Knee pads? For what?" He really has no freaking clue.

SportsCheck or National Sports, there are several in the GTA, will have all that you will need. Enjoy and welcome to more of the male funky smell that comes after practices and games!

We used Mizuno knee pads as recommended by our club. You can find them on Amazon.
Since he’s brand new to the sport, check out some of the clinics at your local volleyball clubs. They’re usually inexpensive and were a huge help with fine tuning the technical aspects.

When I first mentioned knee pads, DS said, "Knee pads? For what?" He really has no freaking clue. I still remember those drills. We dove onto our knees on the hard gym floor over and over and over again so that we wouldn't be scared to do it when we needed to during a game. I have no clue on brands though - they were supplied by the team when I played (and washed with bleach every night - those things were gross at the end of practice/games).

Congrats to your son! Volleyball is a fun, fast-moving sport to watch, so hopefully, you will enjoy it, too. We get DD's knee pads at Dick's. Can't remember what brand we bought this year (the only ones that fit well since she's plus-sized), but I do know they had odor control. From my perspective, that was THE most important selling point.
