It goes without saying that these weren't 'ads' as in recognisable ads, they were made to look like news, facts, reports and polls etc. That's a real problem I see on both sides of issues. Of course, the fact that our so-called journalists for major news organizations no longer report "facts" but peddle opinion makes it all the more easy for fake news to appear real.

And how many people didn't even realize that they were being targeted by a "promoted post" (aka ad). That's what comes of teaching our young to place the importance of "beliefs" over facts.

The one that I've seen revealed as a Russian-pushed story is the one about Clinton's health. Despite the fact that she had a full medical exam and released the results, her stumbling at the 9/11 event was shared as 'proof' that she was hiding some sort of health issue. Meanwhile, Trump releases some paragraph that was obviously not written by a doctor and the target audience thought it was great.
A smart reader thinking critically would say "wait...we already have the full medical report. It didn't show any health issues. And it's not uncommon or people to get dizzy, etc. when standing at an outdoor event. It could be something like low blood sugar, too much sun, dehydration...maybe I'll wait for the medical report." And you would also think "well, if she really is that ill - would she be running for president? Or would she be spending her time getting treatment and being with her family?"
A less-critical reader (AKA target rube) would say "AHA! I knew it! I don't like Hillary, and obviously she's lying about her health! I knew it! She's got every disease known to man, and she's trying to cover it up!"
There were several feature stories done a while back about the fake news. The one guy said he had tried making fake stories targeting both liberals and conservatives. He found that the ones targeting conservatives were much more lucrative because they were shared more often. The ones targeting liberals wouldn't get share, and there would be comments questioning the veracity of the story.

One ad on Facebook is forwarded, shared or discussed by how any thousands of people. There is a reasons it is called a virus or going viral. Actually probably reason s, plural. Off the top of my head 1) it spreads quickly and 2) it can be a disease of sorts. ETA and it did sway votes in my world, I've heard people quote some of the false stories/ads as reasons why they could no longer vote for CLinton. It's bad enough when falsehoods are spread within country but I have to believe the end game there is for their CANDIDATE to win but we (Americans) are still 'in it' together. Russia end game is for their COUNTRY to win. Big difference, to me.

I can’t tell you how much time I wasted/spent debating with normally politically saavy peas here over Hillary’s health on multiple threads.

Ditto. and I can remember being puzzled how people I know couldn't see through it as it seemed so obvious to me. I guess everyone's BS-o-meter works differently.
