Those of us who live in the SF Bay Area never like to hear there is a fire in the Oakland Hills. Especially this time of year with dry brush and dry hot winds.
The last time this happened was in 1991 where 25 people died, 150 people were injured and roughly over 3500 homes & apts were destroyed.
A fire started a little over an hour ago in the Oakland Hills. It started in an empty space surrounded by homes. I mean surrounded.
The local TV station has been covering it live from their helicopter.
Kudos to the firefighters and how quickly they have moved to knock this fire down. And the to skill shown by the helicopter pilots as they go to a nearby lake and scoop up water to dump on the fire.
It ilooks like they may have the fire under control with just a few hot spots. Good job by them.

Live in another area prone to wildfires. Those helicopter and plane pilots are amazing! I hope they do snuff this out quickly. I'm guessing a lot of resources are being thrown at it. (((HUGS)))

Glad to hear they are getting it under control quickly. Good wishes going out to everyone. Fire is so scary. My son lives in Montana so I've been cursing fires for some time now. Heartbreaking to hear about the huge areas scorched by wildfires in Montana. Last I heard it was over a million acres.

I was living in Concord when the 1991 fire happened. I still remember the fire on either side of the highway from Walnut Creek/Concord to the Bay Area. I am so happy that they have gotten the current situation under control.

OMG. They'd better watch those hot spots carefully. The '91 fire restarted from hot spots they thought were completely out the day before. My parents lost their house and a friend in that fire and my husband lost a co-worker. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be checking the local news at 5:00. ETA I was just talking to stepmom about this the other day. They're due for another fire ... it's usually about once a generation. It probably will hit another area of the Oakland/Berkeley hills, not the places that burned last time, although one neighborhood burned in both of the last two big fires. Pray for rain.
