Any recommendations? I have had problems with my hips for several years. It's gotten worse the last year or two and I think our mattress is a big part of it. I also am a side sleeper (mostly on my right which is far worse) and I guess that doesn't help from what I'm reading. Our mattress is about 11-12 years old now and is an innerspring with a pillowtop.
I'm seeing that memory foam is best for hip pain. Can anyone recommend one, esp if you have hip pain? I'm reading websites and reviews and it seems so personal what works. I'm overwhelmed and mattresses are so dang expensive.

There are lots of threads on mattresses. You can gain a lot of information from those. Do a quick search. But I will say I am a side sleeper and HATED memory foam. We bought a $4K memory foam mattress, and it was awful for me. My hips killed me, hubby's back hurt, etc. We gave it to our daughter when she moved to her new apartment and bought her a $100 topper. She likes it now. We then tried a Purple mattress (again memory foam), and it didn't work. I have learned I can never, never do memory foam. We now have a Saatva that we got in March or so, and I LOVE it. Have hip pain on a rare occassion but that usually has to do with sitting too long or not rolling out my muscles after exercising. Hope you find what works for you. Mattresses are a tough cookie to figure out!

I agree. I can not do the memory foam with my hip/back pain. I have the lowest end sleep number and I love it. No more pain getting up in the morning unless I don't cool down correctly after a class. De to my GERD we also got the adjustable frame. No more bitter taste in my mouth at night.

I love the adjustable base too.

I went from barely being able to get up in the morning to now sitting up, no pain and a little more energy. I've had it for around 6 months now.

My sister has slipped discs in her vertebra and has fibromyalgia as well. She has a lot of pain throughout her body from other diseases and is on disability. Her solution was a 100% wool fluffy sheepskin mattress pad. I'm seeing her today and I can try to find out where she ordered it from if you would like. We live in Maryland and it does get hot here in the summer. I'll ask her if that was an issue.

Iluvpink-I heard from my sister. She said she also has a bursa on her hip which I think is a painful fluid filled sac. Anyway, it's not a sheepskin mattress pad that she has, but it is wool and she said it has helped her enormously. The website she got it from is www.cuddleewe.com and when you get there look for mattress topper. You can also look under Faq's, can't sleep and the sleep in luxury headings to get more information on the product. A queen size topper is $413.00. There are a few reviews listed too.

I have memory foam and it really doesn't help my hip pain at all. If I lay on my left side, which is the way I typically sleep, I am in agony after a short while and the pain lingers even after I turn over.
I decided I just have to learn to sleep on the other side.

Ahh, definitely a huge challenge to look for mattresses, for so many reasons!
While quite expensive--I would recommend looking at the Kluft Aireloom mattresses--like the luxury firm (their firm is more like a supportive but very plush in other brands). Very plush and cradling to take pressure off hips and other sore spots, but very supportive and extremely well made. Their "regular" is basically a pillowtop--these are very "pillowtop-y" mattresses. So expensive, but excellent with what you describe. I thought they were much better made and more supportive than Beautyrest Black, which I am less impressed with than in years past.
Oh, and I am sort of suspicious of online mattress reviews--I think companies are behind it with kick-backs, etc. Just a feeling but I wouldn't give too much weight to them--pick what you like and use caution in trusting what you read. JMHO.
Good luck!

Have you tried a body pillow? May be the cheapest relief. I have bilateral knee replacements, one hip replacement, and my other hip needs to be replaced. Using a body pillow between my legs was recommended by my surgeon and helps tremendously. It keeps my hips aligned and takes weight/pressure off since I'm a side sleeper.

I have hip problems too, quite severe at times. Love my memory foam mattress for most things, but it doesn't help the hip pain at all, and I frequently wake up multiple times a night in pain and have to move.
I'm keeping an eye on this thread.

Ok, well so the memory foam may be a no go. Argh. Thanks for the tips. Not sure when the new mattress will happen, hopefully not too long but I definitely have time to research.
I may look into a body pillow or topper until then.

Sleep Number - expensive but worth it.

My husband wanted a Sleep Number. I said I can sleep on almost anything. $8,500 later and I hate that bed. That in addition to my husband's very loud snoring, I've moved into my own bedroom with a regular mattress.
