I posted earlier - I'm off to pick out new counters for my kitchen. My cupboards are a dark java - almost black. U shaped kitchen with a 3'x4' island in the middle. Island is the same dark java. I plan on doing a plain, white, beveled subway tile backsplash (the tiles I love are 2.5"x11"). I had always thought to do something more sedate around the U, and a statement counter on the island. Good idea? Bad idea? Room is side by side with my family room across the back of the house. Paint colour is already chosen as we just did the family room - Para Council Bluff - kind of a grey/driftwood-y feel to it. I've accented the family room with an aqua/touches of turquoise/green for that beachy feel without the seashells kind of thing. UPDATE: So this will be repetitive from my other thread I had started - but I wanted to update here for those who gave advice!! There were SO many choices! I brought a bunch home - we did start out with the remnant idea for the island, but nothing in the remnants available really sang out to me. One did grab my attention - but it was too "blue" for me to do it permanently. With the room beside the family room across the back of the house (all open) and touches of aqua blue as my accents there, the design gal thought it might work. But bringing it home, DD thought it was too "bathroom" kind of counter. It was really pretty - all speckled with some bling specks in it as well. But this is a one shot deal, so no going back. And the blue could change down the road! So I brought home about 4 samples, two for the outer counters and three for the island, including the blue remnant. DD & DH nixed the blue right away. And DH really liked the island one I liked, but for everywhere, not just the island. I kind of agreed once I got them home. So this is it: And a link to their site with a full slab: Wilsonart KolamsThanks for all the advice!!

I love that idea, and wish we could do that.

We just redid our kitchen. I have white cabinets in mine, but my ceilings are low and I wanted it to feel more "airy". Anyway, I put in quartz counter tops, it's called pearl gray. I like it a lot. My island has my sink in it and is partly into my living room (we took down a couple walls for a more open look). I kept all the counter tops the same. I know I'm not helping much, I do like the look of the statement counter top on the island, but I would want a completely different material for it. My FIL always said if you cant match it go completely different. What kind of material were you thinking of for counter tops?

But the good friend helping me today - he used to be part owner of the company he works for (decided to step down and lose the stress lol) so I know he will steer me in the right direction. They carry all kinds of counters - so I'm sure to be a bit overwhelmed!

My countertops are being installed Friday (can't wait!) and I did two different ones. They are quartz; a soft white around the perimeter, and the island is a charcoal grey with subtle veining. Neither one is really a "statement,", but the fact that they are different sort of makes a statement.
Good luck!

It's a very popular look to have a subdued counter on the perimeter and a statement on the island. I love the look, especially because I love a statement granite/quartzite/marble.

honestly, I'd go with something that doesn't stain!! Get a few samples of stuff you like and bring it home. Pour red wine on it, spill some vinegar, bbq sauce, coffee, tea, food coloring. Wipe it off immediately, do it all again and let sit overnight, does it still wipe off? Did it leave a stain? Did it etch the surface or remove the sealant?
With your dark cabinets you are most likely going to choose a lighter counter so it's important to know how it will hold up under use.

If my island wasn't mammoth, I would totally have done a honed calacatta marble there. It doesn't bother me in the slightest to have etching or staining, and (as a hobbyist baker) the idea of all of that cool stone waiting for me to roll out cookies or pie crusts was heavenly. At 3x4, it’s totally doable to find a remnant that size for your island.
They have marble countertops in so many European buildings that have been used for centuries... the patina and character is what makes it gorgeous.

I like the idea. Just don't pick something that's too different in the movement of the natural stone. Like you don't want a really busy quartz with lots of veins and sediment on the island and something that is practically flat on the U, if you're already going to be contrasting the color.
Just pick 1 thing to contrast.

I like it! We have our island a different color from the other counters and I wouldn't do it again. It just doesn't seem put together enough for me.
