Disclaimer - I'm currently on eternal hold with the nurse line at my Dr. I'm curious what you all would do. Would you go to the doctor for the broken pinky toe? If not, what would you do instead? Here's the full scoop: Last week Monday morning, I kicked a chair leg and hurt the pinky toe on my right foot. It was bruised and sore, but after a couple of days I was able to walk fairly normally as long as I wore flip flops. The past 2 days, I've managed to wear closed toe sandals. About an hour ago, I slipped on Crocs to bring stuff out to the recycling bin. I bent down to pick something up when I felt my toe go pop. The toe is pretty painful but not bruised or swollen (yet). What would you do? Update - After being on hold for over 30 minutes, I finally talked to a nurse. She advised me to go to the walk-in orthopedic clinic tonight so they can x-ray the foot and either cast it or boot it. Unless the pain becomes worse, I think I'll take some Advil and ice & elevate it. *update 9/28* My toe is feeling better today. Still a bit swollen and slightly bruised. Walking is definitely less painful than it was yesterday. Crossing my fingers it keeps getting better! (actually I'm just hoping I don't manage to hurt it again next week! )

Chances are good that they can't do anything beyond buddy taping, but even still, I probably would go because there is a chance - even though small - of permanent damage if it's not treated.
We use our feet all day every day. I want to minimize any chance of having a lasting problem.

The only way that I would was if I was in enough pain that I needed prescription painkillers.
For what you described, I would just use ice and elevation when I was resting, and buddy tape it to the next toe to try to keep it straight.
I hope it feels better soon!

Is it bent weird? If not, I probably wouldn't go in, they can't do much about it anyway. Disclaimer: I rarely go to the doctor, so I may be biased. But, I have had several broken toes.

nope
in the last six months i've broken two
right next to each other
not a think they'll do
maybe they'd give you a boot if you asked
that will help you from banging it on something else
my toes are still sore - i broke the first in march and the second in august
i still flinch if my dhs foot comes too close in bed
it will hurt for awhile
sorry - i know your pain

(I didn't go in for those times, either.)

No pain as long as I don't bend in while walking. Lol I've been icing it as I've waited for the nurse. It does feel a bit better.

A pinky toe? No. I'd tape it to the next one if it's painful while walking.

My husband broke a toe once, and all they did was tape it and tell him to take ibuprofen.

This happens to me all the time. You probably dislocated it... when I do it my toe looks fine, just hurts. I've learned if I wear a shoe (a sneaker works best and it hurts like he!! when you put it on) and walk around or better yet up or down some stairs it will pop back in and it is then just fine. Just had to do it at 3am the other day when I caught a chair leg. I have lost count of the amount of times I have done it, I feel like my piggy toe just has to see a chair leg and it pops out of joint.
ETA: the popping sound was the joint popping back in place. It will probably still hurt for a while because it was out of joint for a while. Usually once I get it popped back in the pain goes away.

For me it would depend on the circumstances. If I hurt it at work, or if it was so painful I couldn't go to work, then straight to the doc. Continued pain after a few days - off to the doc. Major swelling, odd angle - same thing. Just sore and a bit bruised - I'd probably wait it out.

It makes sense based on how I kicked the chair.

Husband broke his toe last month. Went to urgent care, was X-ray, diagnosis broken, treatment - taped to his buddy toe. That’s it! If you don’t have money for the visit - skip it.
If your toe is crooked, you should go. Husband popped his toe back into place immediately, which was the right thing to do - according to the doctor.

I ignored the pain and then the next day I could not walk on my foot. Seriously could not walk. I am not a wimp. I had a broken finger when I was ten for two weeks before we finally got it x-rayed. I had to wear a boot for eight weeks. I had weird lingering pain for about a year after that.

When I was a teenager, my horse stepped on my foot and broke my pinky toe (thru my boots). I never went to the doctor for it. A lady at my church was a nurse and looked at it, confirming it was broken, but nothing else was done for it. I iced it a lot and since it was summer, I lived in flip flops until it healed.

OHH THose things HURT!! Especially if you get it between the toes!! It's just a tender spot! Yea it would just depend on the amount of pain and or swelling. I have two toes that stick together since one didn't go back right. I hope they don't hurt to much! But they turn pretty shades! HUGS! Rest well take it easy for a while if you can.

No, not unless you need a note for work. I’ve had 3 broken toes in the past, one time I did need a note for work. I did a lot of walking in my job and the company required everyone wear closed-toed shoes. I got a note for a few days off, and to be able to wear a sandal type shoe.
There really isn’t much to do for a toe. Tape it to the next toe, ice it several times a day. It can take forever for it to heal.
Hope your toe is better soon.

No I wouldn't and when it happened to me I didn't.
A few months ago I did pretty much what you describe, was rushing around the house barefoot and banged my little toe on the leg of the bed. I went to work and it was quite painful, took painkillers a few times during my shift. When I got home and took my shoes off the top outer third of my foot around my little toe was black. It was very painful, but it was all in the right position, nothing sticking out at odd angles so I figured even if it was broken, then there'd be nothing to do for it anyway. I couldn't wear a lot of my shoes, if they pressed on the toe it was too painful to walk, I had to wear Toms shoes to my birthday dinner! Luckily my work shoes are quite wide, so I could wear them with no problems. When I was working (nurse so on my feet all shift) I did have to take OTC pain killers for a few weeks. I still went to work, but I usually walk home from work & I had to stop doing that for about two weeks as after a 9 hour shift that extra 30 min walk was just too much. When I was at home, I mainly wore cotton sport socks (a bit tight on my foot) as keeping the toe held firmly in place was the most comfortable.
The most painful thing was trying to dry between my toes after a shower, that was a killer. Initially it also hurt to have the blankets on it in bed at night. I had pain and was careful with it for probably 2-3 months, but it's been 5 months now and it's back to normal.
I've banged my toes before and while it there was some bruising and pain this last time was totally different and the pain was much much worse - which is what made me think it was broken. Still, I'd treat it the same way if it happened again.

I did, buy my left pinky toe was at right angles to my foot, like a backwards L....... They called in an orthopedic surgeon. It was shattered, he reset it 3 times, saying that they don't do surgery on toes........ He personally wheeled me to X-ray. I have since taped it and others as needed...

A lot of people are mentioning taping the toe. Yours is the little toe and I have no experience with that. However, both my husband and my mother have broken their big toes and taping was absolutely the Wrong thing to do. In both cases, they were given a special shoe with a hard flat sole to wear for in DH's case 2 weeks because his wasn't as bad and in Mother's case about 3 or 4 weeks. DH had first seen his GP which taped the big toe to the next one and the foot specialist took off the tape telling him that if he had continued on that route, it would not have healed properly.

Yes. I broke my middle toe and the swelling was so severe and the pain was horrific. I couldn't walk. It was "just a toe" so I buddy taped it and tried to move on. I worked with a large group of PAs and NPs and they insisted in an X-ray. I had a vertical fracture. 12 weeks in a boot and almost having to go on some sort of bone simulator made me rethink it is "just a toe." If the pain wasn't a big deal then buddy tape it but for me... it sucked and I wouldn't hesitate to ask for a boot or a surgery shoe.

Nope.
I have broken the same pinky for 3 times now.
I just take it to its neighbor and pop ibuprofen.
Sorry your toe hurts.
