A lot of people are mentioning taping the toe. Yours is the little toe and I have no experience with that. However, both my husband and my mother have broken their big toes and taping was absolutely the Wrong thing to do. In both cases, they were given a special shoe with a hard flat sole to wear for in DH's case 2 weeks because his wasn't as bad and in Mother's case about 3 or 4 weeks. DH had first seen his GP which taped the big toe to the next one and the foot specialist took off the tape telling him that if he had continued on that route, it would not have healed properly. I said taping it, but the OP specifically said a pinky toe. If it was her big toe, I would have said go in for the X-ray and make sure everything is okay. While your pinky toe is important for walking and balance, your big toe is so much more important, so I would get it checked out.

If it is a clean break then they won't do anything other than tape it. But I waited 2 weeks once before going to the doctor because the pain was still really intense. Turns out it was not a clean break & he had to re-break it and set it correctly before taping it & having me wear a boot. I ended up in pain for weeks because of the delay in seeing a doctor.

Probably not but I broke my thumb, actually a ligament snapped off a chip of bone and my mom never took me to the doctor because she thought it was just bruised. I barely remembered to mention it at the annual check up and they said I had 3 choices, ignore it, cast it or splint it. I picked splint. If I had gone in right away they would have recommended a cast so I saved myself the aggravation of a cast in high school while I was teaching swim lessons.

Thanks for all the opinions! I appreciate it! At this point, I feel comfortable with the decision to not go in. I've been icing it and elevating when I can, and it's not feeling too bad (unless I walk) If I need to, I'll buddy tape it.

My husband broke a toe once, and all they did was tape it and tell him to take ibuprofen. I had the same experience.

Chances are good that they can't do anything beyond buddy taping, but even still, I probably would go because there is a chance - even though small - of permanent damage if it's not treated. We use our feet all day every day. I want to minimize any chance of having a lasting problem. Broke a toe once. Dr. had me wear one of those flat soled med. shoes for the healing. I have no problems with that foot.

Yes, but my co-pay is $30 and my deductible is $250 starting July 1st and I have already met it, so x-ray would be covered 100%

I've never broken any bone before (knock on wood) so I'd probably go to the doctor, even if there isn't much they could do for it. I'd probably just want to make sure.

Yikes! Hugs to you! I did this THREE times and know the pain. I, too, hit my foot into a coffee table (while dancing & drinking in my house years ago). It hurt so much, but I went to bed & woke up with it KILLING me and swollen. I knew what a broken bone felt like, so I went to get an x-ray. It was broken. All they did was straighten it out a bit and taped it to the next toe.
Keep it elevated as often as you can. It'll hurt for a few weeks. Try to keep off of it. Wear comfy slippers and make sure it's always buddy-taped. Hope you feel better!
(BTW, the next 2 times I broke a toe, I didn't go to the dr, but I understand why you'd want to go the first time!)

Be careful about taking an anti-inflamarory pain med (I think Advil is one). I just broke my arm, and the ortho told me that anti-inflamatories may retard healing in bones according to the latest research. So for me, Tklenol was okay, but no Motrin or Aleve.
I don't remember if he mentioned Advil since I Fidnt have any in the house, but isn't it a form of inuprophen, just like Kotrin?

Same experience for me this summer. That boot was a game-changer for me and helped with the pain greatly.

I would go to the doctor, but a fracture isn't always just a simple thing.

Re: Taping the toe: No experience with the pinky toe, but my "ring finger" toe was broken 2x, and my middle toe was broken once and I buddy taped it, all 3x. You don't want it just hanging off........ The boot sounds like a more secure idea! Again, hope you feel better. It DOES last a few weeks, and mine were ALL discolored, black & blue, swollen and twisted. Sounds so stupid, but now you know how painful it is. Feel better!!

*update* My toe is feeling better today. Still a bit swollen and slightly bruised. Walking is definitely less painful than it was yesterday. Crossing my fingers it keeps getting better! (actually I'm just hoping I don't manage to hurt it again next week! )

I did go to the doctor after about 3 weeks of hobbling on it. 2 of those weeks were my honeymoon in Ireland. He x-rayed it and not only did I break it but the bone was chipped and was sitting next to the joint. Still nothing he could do for it. Eventually it got better. Glad yours is improving!
