We bought our house before dd was born and planned to only be here five years. Well life happened (recession, job woes for dh) and financially it wasn't feasible. Things got better and we were just thinking about looking and dd's health problems started and we were overwhelmed by that. Recently we decided to get serious. We were worried about finding something in our price range and most of what we saw either needed a ton of work that would raise the price a good bit (even with dh doing the work), was only slightly larger than what we have or had other issues. Two offers were rejected. I guess because a better house was out there. And they have accepted our offer!
Because of dd's health issues she will likely be at home through the college years, if not longer. So while we otherwise might be able to stick it out here, it just wasn't going to work. It hasn't been working well lately, especially the bathroom and driveway issue.
Our current house (1,050 sq feet) is a 1950's three bedroom, one bath ranch with no basement and a detached garage and a single lane driveway with no room to widen and backing out onto a very busy main street in our not as small as it used to be town. Our lot is large (almost an acre) but very narrow and long so the neighbor's houses are very close. Our driveway runs right up to our house and there is only a few feet to the neighbor's house and it's the same on the other side. Also the railroad that runs through town is at the back of our property and is loud. I at least am a very light sleeper. And adding on etc isn't worth it in our neighborhood I don't think.
The new house is just a few miles away. It's over 1,500 sq feet, has three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, basement and attached two car garage and is in a nice quiet fourteen year old subdivision and backs up to a wooded area and then some fields. The lot is much smaller but that's all we need and it's less for dh to mow and keep up. Plus it's so new and nice and up to date. Not huge or fancy but nice.
Of course we still have to sell our current house which will be a challenge but we're up for it! It's definitely a starter house or a rental.
