I just wanted to say that we were lucky enough to visit San Juan this spring and stay for a few nights before heading out on a cruise, and it was one of our favorites spots on our tour. Incredible food, friendly people and amazing scenery - it's very sad to consider what folks there must be going through. Lack of electricity is bad, but lack of water - can't even imagine.
All the bogus statements about "it's an island, it's far away" seems like such an excuse for a country that managed to move its military to the middle east and invade a country in about a week. Let's get it together now for our fellow Americans that don't have the ability to leave the island and get it done.

I agree, we need to do more. I wonder if our organizations are stretched thin right now, what with Harvey and Irma affecting the mainland so bad. Not an excuse, but maybe a reason why they're being so slow to react.

I believe response has been slow from our government because Trump didn't realize PR's are US citizens and that PR is not an island out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Hasn't the man ever taken a damn geography/history class?

Yes, I'm sure they are incredibly swamped, but they have surrounding big cities that people can move to as a refuge away from the disaster areas. I lived in Nashville during our 1000 year flood in 2010 and the surrounding communities were so amazingly helpful as I imagine they are in TX and FL - there's just no such areas to reach out to PR. It's got to come by ship and air, and the delay is going to have devastating effects. Let's hope there are no cholera outbreaks there - they reported only 11 of 69 hospitals have generators.

I am hearing locally from many family members that yes help was sent but that because it's an island and there is so much damage that the resources can't be distributed. There are no cell towers so they can't communicate. Damage is much more extensive than in Texas and a Florida. I'm hearing this from multiple local sources that the help is there but that they aren't being acknowledged and the families are frustrated knowing there are people there to help but news is claiming otherwise. It's not like Harvey where you could send in boats to rescue people. There is no communication currently snd the roads are gone so it's hard to get to the people and distribute food water and gas. It's not for lack of people there to help. I have seen in in multiple places that our military was there the day after it maybe a day after that. The family members of people that were sent there are pissed that everyone is saying no one is helping because people are there helping and not at home but risking their lives to help. They are working around the clock.
Yes people are still suffering and not getting supplies but it's not for lack of trying. It's a different situation and the logistics are much more difficult. I hope that they figure out s way to help everyone and soon as it sounds horrible.
From reading and watching the news I thought nothing was being done but hearing relatives talk it couldn't be further from the truth. Does more need to be done yes and more help is in the way.

I think that besides food and water and medical, a military branch or two could have already gotten in and set up some kinds of communications ..

This disaster has been a logistical nightmare, but those logistics were meant to pre-planned. It seem as if not enough was. Add to that the shipping regulations that were lifted for Florida and Texas, but not PR. PR was hit by Irma, too, and the Jones Act certainly could have been waived before this morning.

I agree that it is so sad. Today, I talked with someone who has family still there. His in-laws are trying to fly out and it seems two of the airlines keep reselling their tickets that they had bought, to people who are willing to pay more for the their already bought tickets.
He cannot speak to his side of the family because it is right where Maria hit and there is no phone service.

Hasn't the man ever taken a damn geography/history class? Do you really have to ask??? This is the same moron who said Nambia was a country.
The lack of a response is astounding. It took the White House until today to lift the Jones Act. I truly don't have words anymore when it comes to 45. Or Republicans in general. No one from the party in control is willing to stand up to this man and set him straight about things that are humanitarian and not political in any way. The glee that they have (side eyeing you Paul Ryan) at being in control makes my heart hurt because these elected officials are willing to sidestep pure common sense just to stay in his good graces.
