Our new house has carpet upstairs. It also has carpet in the living room but we'll be taking that up and putting down hardwood. Our current house has all hardwood floors and we do not currently have a vacuum as we got rid of it several yeas ago when we took the carpet out of the bedrooms and redid the wood floors underneath.
I'd like something light weight as the stairs are carpeted. We do have a shih tzu but her shedding isn't too bad. She doesn't have potty accidents but does have a delicate stomach and vomits once or twice a month. Sometimes we get her outside once she starts gagging but not always and sometimes we are not home when it happens. Should we look into some sort of Shark or something like that?

I love my Electrolux canister vacuum. I got it for less on Amazon. We also have a lot of wood flooring. One thicker carpet in the living room and carpeted stairs. I don't know about the stomach issues. Sounds like you might want a small carpet cleaner.

Love my Meile.
Search as the peas have discussed vacuums several times and you can read many comments.

I have a 3 story home. The 1st and 2nd floor hard surface (either wood or tile) and the 3rd floor is carpet with tile in the bathrooms. The first staircase is wood and the 2nd staircase is wood and carpet.
I have a cordless Dyson for the first floor and the stairs. I have a Robot for the 2nd floor and I have a regular Dyson animal that I keep for the 3rd floor.
In addition to all that, my carpet cleaner recommended just a regular small Shopvac to pick up pet messes. He said just to pour really hot water onto the stain, wait a minute or so and then vacuum it up. It works great! I think I picked up my Shopvac for about 30 bucks at HD.

I have said here many times how I love my Dyson ... choose the model that best fits your environment ... I have a big dog and two cats and my beast sucks all the junk up

We recently bought a Shark vacuum for around $135. We have dogs that are heavy shedders and it has worked really well for us.

Dyson animal hands down. I've had mine 7 years. You couldn't give me a Shark anything after two lousy lemons.
One thing I really appreciate about the Dyson is NOT having to find bags that fit but mainly, NO dust in the air while vacuuming. I never really realized how much all the other brands did spew a little bit of dust until I got the Dyson.

I never really realized how much all the other brands did spew a little bit of dust until I got the Dyson. Ha lol. It’s odd how our experiences shape us. I’ve had 2 dyson lemons and won’t buy them again. First one tanked within a week of the warranty running out. 2nd tanked during the warranty but they wouldn’t honor it. DH paid $110 for a replacement piece for this hunk of junk. My DH loves it for some reason I can’t comprehend. It is heavy ( very ) and clunky and awkward to use. It leaves Hair behind all the time ( my hair not pet Hair) and their customer service left a lot to be desired. DH had better take that piece of crap with him in the divorce because I most certainly am buying something else. I didn’t want a second one after the first one tanked. A $500+ vacuum ought to last a while. Our Dysons have not. I’m glad someone is getting their moneys worth out of them.

Definitely Shark. I’ve owned a Dyson before but it died. I spent about a lot less on the Shark than the Dyson. Still loving my Shark.

Thanks everyone. I will do a search and see what comes up. It's always so much easier when there is an overwhelming consensus. I also need to look into washers and dryers as we want stackables so we can use part of the laundry room off the garage as a mud room for our coats and shoes.

I have the Shark liftaway and like it better than the Dyson that preceded it.
