So when I was very active in Scrapping, I collected an embarrassing amount of washi tape. Recently, I went through it as I am purging and found that about 20% of it was no longer usable. The tape was stuck to itself and would tear off in weird pieces rather than strips as designed. What I found was that the ones that were made in the original, Japanese manner are the only ones that really last. They have kind of a rubbery texture and are usually a bit transparent. I wondered whether others have had this same experience. I was especially sad to find that rolls which I had assumed were good quality such as SC products had to be tossed in the trash. Those rolls were spendy back when I got them but now they are useless. Did anyone find solutions for this problem?

No solutions but I had that problem too, especially with the October Afternoon tapes...

It's a common problem with washi tape, especially the ones that are not MT-branded. Not your fault, just poor quality of product overall. There's no cure either. My advice is not to collect washi. Just buy a few rolls of good quality tapes and use them up. My MT tapes are holding up rather well in comparison to the few other rolls I still had in my small stash. I have a few rolls of washi tape from SC kits which I plan on using up as much as possible for wrapping gifts and making small décor for Christmas this year. Might as well make the most of it in a disposable manner.

I've also had that problem with Oct Afternoon and Little B tapes. I wish there was a solution but I've usually found I curse my way through the tape until I've done the project I pulled it out for and then toss the rest in the bin.

I've had to toss a few rolls that I could not get to unwind correctly. Very disappointing. But I have sooo many rolls its not like I don't have a back up

Same story here - disappointing to say the least! We should keep a list here of the good vs. bad brands for longevity.

I've found the same thing and don't know of any solution. It's pretty frustrating. Now I keep all my washi out and visible on dowels I've hung on cup hooks and I use it any time I need tape for any reason. I also find silly ways to use it up like taping a big washi "V" on all the vegan friendly products in the house so DS and his girlfriend can know quickly what they can eat/use when they visit. It started out as a way to differentiate leftovers when DS lived at home and just grew from there.

Well, good to know it's not just the desert dryness that does it. I can assure you that I won't likely buy another roll all the rest of my days!

Oh man, I have so many rolls of washi, I never remember to use it even though it lives on a shelf right in front of my work area. I'll have to search Pinterest for all those layouts I've seen using washi as a background. I kinda did a little gasp ar how wasteful I thought it was, but now I'm thinking they may be on to something there...

I've pitched several rolls, too. Some shredded right on the roll - it was impossible to pull off any usable pieces. Others had no "stick" left once you unrolled them. I don't remember which brands they were. unfortunately.

Don't throw it away! I had some like this but the inside was still good. I used my craft knife to slice into 10-15 layers of tape and pull them all off at once. In most cases my tape was fine under those first 15 layers.
