I'm in. My DH and I have both been eating Keto and doing IF since May. I would love a group to share recipes and help and support each other

milocat Keto macros should be 60-75% fat, 15-30% protein, and 5-10% carbs. What I mean by "lazy keto" is that I don't calculate everyday. Now, my carb intake is very low- between 20-30 carbs, but I don't exactly know about proteins and fats. Most days I don't think I get enough fat and probably have too much protein. I stay away from just about anything processed, but I do have apples and berries a few times a week. Fresh low carb veggies- no "whites" ever- no potatoes, flour, rice, pasta, sugar (except from fruit) and meat. I do eat dairy- tons of eggs, cheese, butter, heavy cream- no yogurt. Only drink water (gallon a day) and butter coffee- except a Mich Ultra sometimes! I have to be very strict to stay in ketosis. Do you have any ketone strips? Those really help me stay on track.

I have lost 62 lbs following a ketogenic diet but I am quite strict. For example someone mentioned their low cal soup with carrots. That to me is not a keto soup. Carrots are higher on the glycemic index as most root veggies are, and Keto is high fat and generally higher calorie then most realize. I do what some might consider lazy keto. I do not eat foods that are non keto though. No wheat, no fruit but a couple of berries etc. Lazy keto is essentially counting your 20 grams of carbs (net, or up to 50 total) and not worrying about counting fat/protein. Non lazy keto is figuring out your macros which are pretty standard set at 75% of your diet is fat, 20% protein and 5% carbs. There are excellent resources for fine tuning those to your height and weight. I have been a moderator for a ketogenic FB page for a long time but maintaining my anonymity on this board is important to me. www.dietdoctor.com is a great resource. There is also cooking keto with Kristie if you plan to follow a clean eating style of keto. I am not completely clean though. I think it would be fun to have a discussion here but I will confess up front I am not very flexible and believe you have to be all in for this way of eating to work.

Really Red IF is intermittent fasting. Say you finish your last meal at 7pm. You don't eat again for another 14/16/18 or however many hours. Someone else can probably explain it better. That's one method of intermittent fasting but there are others such as the 5:2 diet when, on 2 days a week, you only consume 500 calories in 24 hours but eat a normal healthy diet the other 5 days.

Count me in! I have had success with 5:2 in the past and need to get back to it (along with Trim Healthy Mama, which isn't necessarily low carb but is in some ways).
ETA: wondering if that is ok? Or do we have to be keto/very low-carb to be part of the group?

Are you definitely planning to get back to the 5:2? I've been umm-ing and ah-ing for a couple of weeks no Anyone else doing or planning to do 5:2 specifically?

I would like to join! I have been 16:8 for almost a year now, and i have lost a few pounds, but, it is obvious I need to tighten up my diet, too. Low carb works great for me, but, I can’t be too low, or it will be unsustainable long term for me. I hope there is room for people who are modifying a bit to join in.
Heading to WDW next week, so....I’ll check in after that. :-P
Thanks! Erin

How do you fast without getting sick?! My blood sugar would bottom out and I'd be hangry all the time! I read a book years ago about the glycemic index, but otherwise, I don't know much about this diet. I'm interested in this as I'd love to lose about 15 lbs.

Those of you who do IF... I eat my last meal at 6PM and then breakfast around 10AM the next day- so that's 16:8 right? But I do have butter coffee or hot tea around 9PM- does that break the fast?

I read a book years ago about the glycemic index, but otherwise, I don't know much about this diet. I'm interested in this as I'd love to lose about 15 lbs. Have you actually tested your blood sugar to see if it is low? I tried 5:2 years ago and seriously felt faint towards dinner time. I was breastfeeding an older baby/toddler so not sure if that had anything to do with it. So, I stopped. A few years later I was still on the 5:2 facebook page and started seeing notifications with success stories. I read a lot of posts and gave it a try again. Some days are easier than others, but there are some things that help me be successful. One is to not be eating a ton of carbs on a regular basis prior to fasting. Also, on days that you fast, eat protein and fiber. A lot of people drink brother or tea to help them feel fuller. Some people don't eat at all, just liquids, until dinner. Others spread their 500 calories over a few meals. Having a plan helps, although some days I just fell into fasting because of my schedule or not being hungry. Also, you do get used to it and recognize that you aren't going to die of hunger and that the feeling of being hungry passes. If you are generally eating more carbs, you are going to feel hungry/hangry faster than if you are eating higher ratios of protein and fat.

I choose my fast days based on how busy my schedule is that week. For example, Monday was my fast day because my daughter had dance practice from 6-9:30. It is an hour drive for us so I knew that would be a good fast day because I wouldn't be home. So nights that she has dance practice and/or volleyball games are the days I pick to fast. The first and second fast are the hardest. Now when I wake up after a fast I am not heading straight to the kitchen to eat. Sometimes I actually make myself eat at around 9:30 am the next day.

I'm in! I'm doing a protocol with a doctor and start Sunday (there's a two day period for "fat loading" then it's low fat proteins and green veggies. No carbs from grains or sugar. Some fruits allowed. Just got Bragg aminos and apple vinegar.

I just started low carb four days ago, so I'd like to join in. I lost 40 lbs on it about 5 years ago, but some of that found me again. I'm trying to keep my carb intake around 10 gm every day.

I think I will start on Saturday or Sunday. That's great. I will work on getting into the right frame of mind to join you Have you decided when you will start? I have book club tonight so know I will be eating some not-so-good stuff tonight. I don't think we have plans for tomorrow so as of now I am going to start then. I have a hard time knowing if I should just have two set days for fasting each week (same days each week) or adjust it based on what I am doing that week. I typically did the latter but then in some ways it caused problems because I would just say, "I will fast tomorrow" and then the next thing you know, it is the end of the week already. Either way, I need to decide at the beginning of the week which days will be fasting days so that doesn't happen.

I personally do not do scheduled fasts. Following the keto way of eating I only eat when I am truly physically hungry even if it means sitting with family and friends and simply sipping a drink. It lends itself to naturally fasting though. I don't snack anymore after being on this over a year and generally eat 2 meals a day.

My opinion is don't break your fast on anything, if you ingest calories you are breaking your fast. I don't have anything but black coffee/tea/water until I break my fast around 11, and I do this every single day. I don't have any sort of artificial sweetener/sugar in my beverages either.

iamkristinl16, I used to do pre planned days - usually the same two but I did change them if something cropped up. I preferred knowing ahead rather than deciding on the day. I felt mentally prepared that way. I hadn't decided but...Monday is as good a day as any after a busy weekend so I'll say that 🙂 I need to refresh my memory on what I can have that keeps within the 500 calorie limit although I seem to remember reading an article saying that limit has been revised to 800. I'll see if I can find it. Eta www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/12/good-news-dieters-52-relaxes-rules-allows-800-calories-day/

Eta www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/12/good-news-dieters-52-relaxes-rules-allows-800-calories-day/ I saw awhile back that Michael Mosely said that people could do 800 calories if they wanted, but I am going to stick to 500. I wonder if people are still seeing results with 800? I am short, sedentary and have a slow metabolism. I don't think I would do as well with 800 calories, but it is nice to know that my fast day won't be "ruined" if I do go over. I used to spread my calories out throughout the day but I think that I would get more benefits of fasting if I wait to eat until as late in the day as possible. But, I need to be prepared with some low cal snacks in case.

meridon, I found that when I went low carb, those crashes no longer happened. I no longer found myself hangry, and no longer had that bottoming out feeling that I associated with blood sugar crashes. I did ease into all of it. I cut sugar cold turkey and then dropped bread and other carbs over the course of a few weeks. I started with fasting 12 hours, which was very easy, even before I dropped most carbs, and then went to 14 and then 16. I don't even think twice about 16 now. It comes naturally. I am on vacation this week which is always worrisome with eating right. It's been easy to stay on track so far. I took my dd food shopping the first day I arrived and bought some berries for my hotel fridge. Brought nuts, pumpkin seeds and some keto-friendly treats with me (Moon Cheese and some salted coconut flakes). Ordered a burger without the bun and without the "house sauce" one night. Was a restaurant last night that had few low carb sides, so I ordered a double order of broccoli. My only "controversial" treat has been an apple... only controversial for those that are strictly ketogenic. i'm also more of the lazy keto type, sometimes more low carb. I've been menopausal for over 10 years now and have always blamed my slow weight loss on that. I am still a slow loser compared to some, but it's working well for me. Over 20 lbs gone. Not sure how many clothing sizes down as sizing is all over the place these days. I would normally take pants or shorts sizes 10-14 into the dressing room. I just bought denim shorts last weekend and they were sizes 2-8. The 8s are even a little looser than they should be but they were only $5 and fit me better than what I had at home. And no way I am I a size 2! Total size inflation!

I’m in. I’ve been doing IF and loosely Keto for almost 16 weeks now. I track using MFP and have tried to stay below 30 carbs per day. I have lost a total of 41 pounds. This is working for me so well! All the other times I’ve tried to lose weight by just counting calories, but I was eating too many snacks and all the wrong foods. I feel like I’ve found the thing that works for me! I bought a new pair of jeans last weekend and they 4 sizes smaller than the jeans I bought last winter. This weight loss has really showed itself in my clothes. Often I can lose 10-20 pounds and not even one size, this time it’s coming off all the right places.
I don’t snack at all. I eat lunch at 11:15 (Teacher lunch time) and dinner around 6:00. That’s it. I eat no sugar, only the rare piece of fruit. I find if I stay away from sugar that I don’t want or need it. If I give in and have a Starbucks sweetened drink, the next day is torture when it comes to cravings. For me it’s not worth it because of having to fight the cravings.
