I've been addicted to Diet Coke for 30+ years, ever since I worked at McDonalds in high school. Seriously, that is ALL I drank for YEARS, very rarely any water at all, about 8 cans of DC a day. I'm 50 years old and have had really rough menopause systems for a couple of years & recently started feeling achy all the time, joint pain, tired, mild brain fuzz, etc. to the point I am concerned about my health. So, I've decided to give up Diet Coke. I'm only on day 3 but so far, so good. No symptoms of withdrawals so far, lol. I'm drinking lots of water & nothing else. I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with it. What motivated you to stop drinking Diet Coke? How bad was your addiction? How long ago did you stop? Have you noticed any changes in your health because of it?

Good job! It just gets easier and eventually tastes yucky. I quit pop about 4 years ago, Pepsi drinker since I could walk. I drink tons of water now and of course coffee. 😉 I will occasionally have a diet pop, but they are few and far between.

BIG Diet Pepsi addict! Been quit for almost 2 years now this month. Have not even had a sip of any kind of carbonated drink. I drink water and that's all. Feel 100 times better.

I quit like for a month one time and I did feel soooooo much better. And! O dropped like 10 lbs without really trying. Then I started again because I just didn't feel like water one day. Then there is eating out, if you order something at fast food, what do you get to drink? I don't want to drink all the sugar ones either. Restaurants, you can at least get a glass of water, but most fast food joints give you a little wee cup of tap water that tastes bleh! I drink at about 2 of the 16.9 oz bottles a day. I'm trying to psyche myself into quitting again and I will, so this is a great reminder that I need to set a stop date! I had a boss that they thought he had MS because of the symptoms he had and now figure it was aspartame.

I get something to drink about 30mins to hour after the meal. You really don't need to drink with your meal. It's kind of hard at first, but you get use to it.

I'm about to start this journey TOMORROW! I have always been addicted to regular coke but stopped drinking that earlier this year when tested for diabetes and my sugar levels were way too high. I changed to drinking Coke Zero instead. They are now normal, however I have noticed lately that I have an increase in headaches and general feelings of unwellness. I've been on holidays for the past 2 weeks and have been drinking a lot more than normal. We now have a "new" coke called No Sugar which I have been drinking. Headaches, a lot of nausea so I am wondering if it is the soft drink. I have tried to give up before but really need to this time- I hate feeling lethargic all the time. I don't drink coffee or tea so I will going to plain water. Wish me luck! Oh and I am 54- today so I have also wondered if the coming of menopause might be adding to the problem. Corinne

I started to feel MS type symptoms about 10 years ago. For years I drank 2 44 oz fountain diet cokes per day. I loved it! I went through horrible withdrawal symptoms. My best friend and I worked for the same company at the time, she offered to go buy me one because I was so hateful and moody. That lasted 3 weeks so I just kept quiet and out of sight knowing that I was being unreasonable. I will never ever drink anything artificial again.
A while after I quit diet coke, I tried a regular coke at lunch. Well I forgot how much I loved soda with food. I had to switch over to iced tea (plain not sweet) and it's been easy ever since I found tea. I lost weight both times I stopped soda. My biggest tip is find what you can drink instead. Try strawberry water or tea. I love that in the summer. Fresh sliced berries. Yum! You can also microwave (in a glass bowl) cubed fresh peaches and get a delicious syrup from the peaches. Warm peaches are also delicious mixed in yoghurt or steel cut oats. Ok now I'm hungry...

I gave up Diet Coke (and soda in general) when my acid reflux got really bad. I loved Diet Coke! It was tough to say ‘No’ for about a week, then it got easier. I have had a sip or two here and there, but I haven’t really drank it for almost 10 years. And those sips made me realize I have lost my acquired taste for it.
Besides my acid reflux not flaring up now, I don’t feel bloated anymore. My drink of choice now is unsweetened Iced Tea. If they don’t have that, then it is water for me.

Yes, I've always heard that it is actually really bad for a person to "wash" their food down. Bad habit, and a good reminder. If I do fast food, I don't like to get fries either, so a perfect solution is to just order and entree and then have a drink when I'm home. Way less calories sans fries, and no bad soda! lol

I love diet Coke - it was my go to drink for over 30 years...started each day with it and had maybe 2 or 3 per day.
I drank my last one Dec 1, 2016. I quit all soft drinks cold turkey and haven't had one since.
The reason: I wanted to lose weight and improve my health/diet and I met with a nutritionist and she said to give it up. I only drink water and an occasional unsweetened tea now.
I really feel better! There is no nutritional value in it and after reading The Obesity Code, I realized how bad artificial sweeteners are. I will be honest, some days, I really, really want one - especially when seeing others drink them but I like having good health better than I like drinking a Diet Coke.
Good luck to you-I believe quitting cold turkey is the best way to go, but do what works best for you.

I stopped drinking regular coke (all soda really) about 2 years ago. It wasn't easy. After about a year I grabbed a coke at a picnic and I couldn't finish it.

I'm not sure I conquered my DC addiction yet because I still miss it! I went cold turkey May 15. I also gave up all artificial sweeteners that day. The one thing I have noticed is that I no longer have out-of-control cravings for all things sweet.

I haven’t had any for about 4 months. I don’t miss it so I guess I did. I like the flavour but I gave it up and it’s gone now.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with it. What motivated you to stop drinking Diet Coke? How bad was your addiction? How long ago did you stop? Have you noticed any changes in your health because of it? Drank it ages 16-43. All day, everyday. Never any other Liquid. I would say 8 or more cans a day sounds right for me as well. January of 2014 I challenge myself to start drinking water. By fall I had worked myself up to 80 oz. and really had no time to drink dt coke, lol. I would drink a dt coke occassionally. One day DS suprised me with a super sized dt Coke for breakfast. I found I couldn't, nor did I want to drink it after a few sips. Upon reflection I realized it had been well over a month since I has "treated" myself to one. That was the last sip I've taken. Three years later I really don't miss it. Sometimes, after grocery shopping I'm tempted to grab one in the check out but it isn't that I miss it- but that was always my way to decompress after shopping, which stresses me out. Prior to quitting I always woke with a pain in my side in the middle of night. Nothing relieved it and I couldn't position myself comfortably because of it. Once I started upping my water intake it seemed to alleviate but it wasn't until I entered the "treat" only phase did it disappear. I finally made the connection when it would return on those days I "treated" myself. And while that seems a minor benefit the pain was so severe it really was a major one. my tip- learn to love water! Water now gives me that same, "oh that tastes so good" feeling dt coke did and I crave it. Something I never thought possible. I started by carrying bottle water with me everywhere. Then DH bought me a Tervis and it went everywhere with me. It also heloed me tack my intake, When that broke, I upgrade to a faux 30 0z yeti. Now I keep one at home and one at work. The one at home travels with me everywhere except work. It always has water. I try to drink at least 2 a day, ideally I need 3 or more.

G Usually i have my faux yeti with me everywhere I go, so that's what I drink when eating fast food. (Which I rarely do anyway) but on a few occasions I've ordered bottled water- most places here offer it- or the cup of water. It does come in a small cup, but it has ice and it comes from the soda machine, which is the same place it comes from in a sit down restaurant, so it's never been a problem.

I quit maybe ten years ago because I had read about the negative effects of diet soda. No real issues. I would occasionally order one in a restaurant for years after that, but, now, it doesn't even sound good.

Only ever drank regular coke and now rarely do. Never could stand the taste of the diet stuff. Water is the only way to go. Growing up, coke was a REAL treat, not a regular item in the household. Good luck to those that are trying to quit.

I was a Diet Coke fan forever, gave it up about 5 years ago and now it just tastes nasty! I do drink at least 1 cup of coffee each morning now, but other than that strictly water w/lemon or green tea.
You can do it!

Diet Coke addict since high school. I gave it up with my first pregnancy when I was 32-33 and limited it with my second. Before the kids, I drank diet coke or alcohol and water only if I was working out. After kids, I incorporated more water. Still between me and hubs, we'd drink at least 2 cases a week not including those large fountain drinks we'd get when out.
I started limiting and then switching to cola with only real sugar about 5 years ago. I finally started listening to all the artificial sweetener studies and getting older, you feel more aches and pains and your own mortality starts to become real. DH finally quit 1.5 years ago. I buy pepsi with real sugar for home but hide it to not tempt dh. He's an all or nothing kind of guy. I can go without for long periods of time and have one when he's traveling for work, usually at my afternoon break.
A couple months back dd was having a bad flare up, and wasn't going to bed until 12:30 to 5am each night, I still had to get up early to let the dogs out and open the chicken chute. I started drinking a lot more soda, (not a coffee drinker). Within what seemed like a week, I had really bad heartburn and my joints started aching. Cut off the soda and the symptoms went away.
Good luck to you as you quit! It's definitely better for your health.

And making my morning cup of tea has become a little moment of zen before starting my day.

I Loved Diet Pepsi. I quit over the evidence of how bad it is for you- went back. Quit again. I haven't had any it about 2 years now. Perrier has helped with satisfying the thirst quenching aspects that my old friend once satisfied. Now I can't drink one if I tried. Tastes disgusting. Hang in there! I does get easier!!

I quit soda for a year and didnt feel any different so went back to it. Now I hardly drink it, maybe twice a month. Usually at a restaurant too.
Try sparking water instead and then switch to water. Sometimes, I'll drink lemonade which probably isn't that much better or flavored tea. Take tiny steps and you can do it.

I quit all soda cold turkey when I was about 25 because I was suffering ulcers. I never went back. DH guzzled Diet Coke like it was being discontinued (probably drank a gallon of day easily), until he got sick. He was diagnosed with lupus, and his doctors told him to never touch anything with aspartame again because it was a factor in his illness, likely a trigger for his episodes. He just moved to regular Coke, although he only drinks one or two a day. Still not great, but better than the quantity of Diet he once drank.

I gave up Diet Pepsi about 20 years ago - I had a lot of bladder issues. Getting off the soda made a huge difference! It was difficult for the first month or so, but now its no issue at all. I have an occasional DP with a meal now and then, but I don't miss it. You really will feel better once you stop drinking Diet coke.

LaCroix helped me kick the habit for good. I found what I really missed was the bubbles and something that tasted different than water. I now use a soda stream to make my own sparkling water, but keep a few La Croix around when I need something on the run.

I gave up Diet Coke (in a can only though, Diet Coke on tap always tasted gross to me) several years ago when I gave up HFC and fake sweeteners. I switched to seltzer water and it wasn't so bad at all. I do wish restaurants would catch on to the trend and sell seltzer water at pop prices, they could easily do it since they are just mixing seltzer with syrup, would even save them 3 cents a cup. My local mini theater does that and I love it. Wish fast food places and other theaters would catch on. Not that I eat out a ton, but when I do I would like seltzer water.

I go through phases of drinking regular Coke, Coke Zero and giving g up all soda. I haven't noticed an impact on my weight or health regardless of what I'm drinking or not drinking. I have worked to cut back my consumption and switch to water in most cases.

Funny about the timing of this thread - a friend just posted yesterday that she had tried giving up her Diet Coke to see if she felt better without it. She didn't notice any difference at all, and neither did someone else who commented. I think people react differently and what causes problems for some is not necessarily a problem for others. (But I'm saying this as one who didn't grow up drinking any soda/pop, and still rarely does.)

I was easily a 5 cans per day addict from about 15 years old until 5 years ago (32yo) when I quit cold turkey. I had started feeling like the soda was eating away at my stomach and was just sick of feeling terrible like that when I woke up. I haven't had one since, and my stomach stopped feeling bad almost immediately. Barring a few ginger ales (maybe 2 per year) I do not drink any soda at all anymore.
