So 8 months ago thanks to thyroid cancer I had to have two surgeries to remove my thyroid. After the first surgery I was pleasantly surprised at how flat and smooth my scar was. I could tell it would disappear eventually. After the second surgery I could tell that was no longer the case. It was bumped up and dark pink. Looks like I have a pink gummy worm sitting at the base of my throat. I usually cover it with makeup to avoid questions and looks. But it’s still obvious. Today I got five steroid injections into the scar to hopefully flatten and reduce it. I’m so excited, I don’t think I realized how much this scar bothered me till he told me about the injections as a treatment. So here’s my before picture. He did say it can take a few rounds for full results. HopUpdate 2 weeks after injection less red and smoothing out! efully in a month I have an improved after picture! Here’s a pic two weeks after injection. Not as dark and definitely smoothing out! Attachments:

I am glad you were able to find something to hopefully help. I've never had a scar like this but I am sure I would be self conscience about it.

mom Thanks. I’ve never had a scar like this before either. I honestly think it also just pisses me off because of the reason why I have it.

I hope you get the result you want from the injections. And I'm glad you're cancer-free!

I have a similar vertical scar from heart surgery. It looked just like yours but eventually it has faded and very little is still raised. I also had thyroid surgery so I have that scar too. Oh and let's not forget the c-sec. at any rate, high collars and scarves will help you get through the winter. I only recently began wearing low cut blouses again (2yrs) and say get a good look at my heart scar! But really must people don't even notice. Good luck

I wish that they had removed my thyroid instead of irradiated it! That said, I had a terrible scar from c-section #1. With c-section #2, since I scarred so bad from the first one, they gave me radiation treatment in the hospital. They promised it would dramatically reduce the scarring, and it did. Something to consider if this doesn’t work as well as they’d like.

Its a keloid scar. I have them too. Look for silicone pads to wear. They help tremendously with scar reduction. Scar Away is one brand ive used with some success

Scar Away is one brand ive used with some success For the last 8 months I tried Mederma, rose hip oil, vitamin e, coconut oil, and the silicon patches. Was religious about applying them and no change at all. That’s why I did the steroid injection. Other than cutting out the scar and starting over with possibly the same results, my doc and the dermatologist told me the steroid injections are 90% effective and flattening and lightening the scar.

Hope that the treatment works quickly for you with minimal repeat rounds. I've never heard of this, but it's amazing what they can do.
I have a raised scar on my wrist from a surgery. It was like they pulled up the skin and stitched. The physical therapist actually made this little wrist band that had a hardened putty inside that I used when I slept. Totally flattened the skin back out, I was amazed! Several years later you'd have to know I had surgery to pick up the scar and it spans the top of my wrist!

I hope you get the results you are hoping for. If not, I would just ignore it and wear whatever the heck I want.

He did say it can take a few rounds for full results. Hopefully in a month I have an improved after picture! I had keloid scars on my face and arm from the DUI accident. For my arm I had actual injections. Two rounds. For my face I had lazer treatments along with dermabrasion because it was unsafe to do steroid injections there. And for the one under my jaw bone, I had steroid air injections. A gun filled with steroids was pumped and then held against my scar and then it was shot off. I had tons of tiny holes where the injections took place. I had that done twice. It has been 18yrs this coming Thanksgiving and honestly only time healed them. While the steroids helped with the pain and itchiness, only time helped with color and how raised they were. You have to be careful because too many treatments can cause the area to thin out and open up. Some people opt to have the scar cut open and restitched differently. I had that option for the one on my breast. But I chose to do nothing knowing in time it will flatten out

PolarGreen, ditto on your lovely face and eyes!
Please keep us updated on the treatment progression. My Dahlia had several surgeries as an infant and they cut right across her abdomen for her illeostomy at birth, and then the reversal at 6 months. Her scar is huge and quite prominent. She's self conscious and we told her when she stops growing we'll have it fixed.
She wore a bikini once around her close friends, but otherwise she watches out for it, won't wear shirts that would pull up and expose her belly, etc. I always feel a little bad when we are in a fitting room and that's her little test, she raises her arms to see if the shirt passes muster.
As far as I knew, having the scar cut out and restitched was the only option, so I'm really anxious and hopeful that turns out to be a good option. Crossing my fingers for you!

Ds has an almost hip to hip cut too for his extended hemicolectomy (70% of his colon was removed along with appendix etc). His surgery was 9.5 yrs ago. So far it hasn't been an issue. Of course being a boy, his swim trunks cover it. He also has scars from his Cvl Broviac lines. It just itches him once in awhile. We were also told the only fix is to reopen it and stitch it differently. But were also told it may heal that way again and since its by intewtines could cause infection or issues with his intestines and muscles. He originally had internal and glue. It cuts two of his muscles in half so he has an 8 pack not a 6 pack LOL

oh my gosh, your son, what an ordeal, momma. I'm glad he sounds better, and yeah, I wouldn't mess with the scar either. But yeah, definitely scars are 'cool' for a guy. Bless his heart.

My DD has a 6 inch scar on her hip from a surgery when she was 15. Her scar ended up looking like a gummy worm too. She would not wear a bathing suit or anything else that showed the scar. She had the steroid injections, they didn’t seem to help much.
Over the years she has gotten past worrying about the scar and wears anything she wants.
I have a scar from under my breasts to my pubic bone, with a jog around my belly button. It is ugly, but I am never in a position to wear anything that would show that area any way.
I hope the injections work for you and you get the results you are looking for.

I have the same type of scar from my thyroid cancer in '96 -- I was 35 at the time. Instead of red, the welts are white now, but it still shows a lot. It has never really bothered me and I have never tried to cover it up -- I kind of consider it a battle scar and I won the battle. It reminds me that Someone was looking out for me. (It drives my mom crazy though --she gifts me with a lot of scarves and big necklaces!)

oh yvonne and @calimom2 sorry to hear of your kiddos scars and surgeries. I had surgery as an infant in my head, 60 stitches ear to ear like a headband. My hair covers it so I rarely think about it except for when a hair stylist asks about it. I imagine it was quite different for them growing up with the scars being visible.

I hope it works for you! My youngest DD had heart surgery as a baby. Her incision scar has faded over the last 31 years, but she basically had little holes left from all of the tubes- about 5-6 of them. She decided to have breast augmentation and the surgeon fixed the scars. I think she's more happy about that than her new boobs!

I'm also a thyroid cancer survivor. I'm coming up on 3 years in December. My scar was not bumpy, but sure was red and angry looking. I also had a stretched out freckle that thankfully has shrunk in intensity and size. My scar is hardly noticeable by me or anyone else at this point. I wish the very same for you!

Great, I hope it works well! It looks promising! I have a scar like that where my port was. It healed nicely when the port was placed, but when it was removed the scar was like yours. The port was removed in February and it's finally starting to fade in color a bit though it's still raised and shiny like you said.
I can easily hide mine and it doesn't bother me when it does show, but I'm interested to see that there are other options.
