I would hope that our president has managed not to fuck up every single interaction he's had with the families of the fallen.
This post says so much about how low the bar is for Trump. His minions want us to celebrate him for that one time he managed to not denigrate a dead soldier.

I wanted to add that sometimes you have a pivotal phone call where you remember everything that was said, how it was said and the exact words used. I had that 3 years ago, I repeated the conversation to others, so it got logged in my memory. This year that conversation was brought up and I was told I misunderstood the conversation and I said no, I remember every single word and how it was said. I don't have the best memory, I forget things said to me at work 5 minutes ago lol, but I can still tell you how that call 3 years ago went down today.
But I imagine since this call to the widow was just another to do item on Trump's agenda, so he just remembers what his overall message was supposed to convey. Not how he went off script. He probably can't remember his exact words.
I don't like how Trump gave that veiled threat, that he has proof. Yes I imagine the White House records all his calls, but you don't dangle that out there as if he's going to release the tape to the news to play.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders has said that there is neither a transcript nor a recording, although Trump said he had proof and Lara Trump said that she saw a transcript. So someone is lying (or they destroyed the transcript?).

That posting style was so reminiscent of her that I had to ask.

That posting style was so reminiscent of her that I had to ask. She denies it, but it's so completely obvious to anyone who has been around for a while.

I am not a Trumper, and actually I think he is the worst President. As someone who has experienced death of a close family member, I do remember at times, the things people said that made me wince inside. I think that in trying to be consoling, people fumble for words to say. In addition, what might make me wince wouldn't even register with someone else. However, for him to deny what was said (even though it didn't come across as he intended) and he did say that, is what has created the shitstorm. He provokes fights when none needs to exist. This is an argument that he will NEVER WIN, but he is incapable of acknowledging his own deficiencies. What he should have said was "I apologize to the family if my words caused them any distress. That was not my intent and I sincerely apologize". PERIOD!!! ETA: Argghh, I've started doing the Trump "all caps and exclamation points!" I agree with all of this. He is his own worst enemy. If he had made that apology, I could have appreciated the difficulty of making those phone calls. But no, had to lie and use dead service members as a way to score points and "win". He's disgusting. He has to boast and brag how everything he does, is better than all of the other Presidents who came before him. He comforts the families of the fallen more/better/faster/etc than any other President, don't you know? Trump started this shit storm by LYING, which he does multiple times a day over SHIT that is easily proven or disproven.

I can give Trump his credit- He has made one good phone call and a Supreme Court pick that wasn't bad (I like the court to be mixed). Everything else has been turds at a fan. Do I get to deduct points for going after 2 other gold star families?

I will say that although I am NOT a fan of his, Trump does take a lot of crap. However most of it is of his own making as the man cannot be diplomatic to save his life. And he always has to “win”. Smdh

I'm sure he has made phone calls and written letters that were very comforting to gold star families. I have a huge problem with him saying that Obama and Bush did not. He's the one who politicized this, and digs himself deeper and deeper. His lies hark back to his campaign slogan of "People are saying..."

Smdh not to mention he gives a lot, if not more, crap to anyone and everyone who doesn't fully align with his current (up to the minute) agenda. In return for all the disrespect he doles out, he expects and demands respect. Yeah, not so much.

That sounds suspiciously like "what difference does it make." Also, apparently people who post about Trump daily here care quite a bit. Although oddly I haven't seen anything lately about how the unemployment rate is the lowest it's been since 1973 and how the Dow and S&P have consistently hit higher and higher records. So maybe you're right, it's no big deal. These gains may be good, but they don't negate the fact that the current president and congress members are trying their darnedest to make healthcare inaccessible to millions, redo the tax code to favor businesses and the rich while squeezing the middle class, and annihilating any gains we've made in environmental protection in the last 30 years. All while sidetracking everyone with tweet-wars and petty, selfish behavior. There is a constant undercurrent of uncertainty in this country that we haven't seen since maybe the Cold War or WWII (I'm guessing. I wasn't around then). People are scared that those in charge are going to cause a military conflict or economic calamity for those who don't have comfortable amounts in their banks accounts or IRAs. It is scary and unnerving. I think that's why people focus so much on Trump's errors and mishandling of basic things like giving a decent offer of condolence call. They're scared that if he can't even handle the "regular things" (not to belittle the death of someone who died serving our country), then how's he going to handle the "big stuff"?
