Hello- Has anyone here who has had a tubal ligation gone on to have an endometrial ablation? I set my surgery date but after researching I am convinced i should cancel it. People said they have gained like 50 lbs and have terrible pain after. I also saw an insert that said " Patients who undergo endometrial ablation procedures who have previously undergone tubal ligation are at increased risk of developing post ablation tubal sterilization syndrome which can require hysterectomy. This can occur as late as 10 years post procedure." What has your experience been like?

I have had both. I was happy for both. But, it turns out it isn't what I needed because I had adenomyosis (sp) and a hysterectomy is in my future.
I do not regret either, it is what it is. The ablation was necessary because of the crime scene periods.

I had my tubes tied in 2003. I had an endometrial ablation in 2012. No problems at all. In fact it was heavenly to no longer have such heavy periods. The surgery itself was fine I had it on a Thursday and was back to work on Monday after a quiet weekend. My periods gradually got less and less from the time of the surgery until Oct 2015 and I haven`t had one since.

I had a tubal ligation at the time of a C-section for my third child in 2005. Three months later, I still hadn't stopped bleeding so had an endometrial ablation. It worked very well for me with no side effects like you are describing. Never was I in horrible pain and none of my friends or family that's had both, in pain. That's right after and including all the years later. We all say the ablation was the best thing we'd ever done!! (oh, and no weight gain for most of the women I knew that had both). Also, none of them needed a hysterectomy later on.
I did end up having a hysterectomy in 2013, but that was because I had ovarian cancer.

Tubes tied in 2000 and ablation in 2015. I wish I hadn't waited so long for the ablation. I was told it is possible I may need a hysterectomy down the road, but right now the ablation has solved all my problems and IM ever so grateful for the procedure. It did take longer to recover from than he estimated, but it wasn't anything horrific. I do not have a period anymore and before they ere crime scene type, lasting 7 days or more. It was miserable. I still have the cramping but I can deal with that. I had no weight gain related to the ablation. I do get PMS type gains but they always go back to normal, just like it did when I had my periods before. Best thing I have ever done for myself medical wise.

Great! Thanks for all the positive feedback. I can't believe all the negative things I have read about the procedure.

were you by chance on the Hyster Sisters website / forums? Just curious... I know that before my hysterectomy, I was doing some research and the most awful stories of things that could / did go wrong seemed to pop up on that website. I know it's good to have a place for getting information, but frankly the stuff I read on that website scared the heck out of me instead of reassuring me, so I just stuck to the information my doctor gave me (regarding the chances of complications), after that.

I had both done at same time. My ablation wasn’t as successful as some others, I still get a few heavy days every month. This is probably due to the fact I have a large fibroid, so you may have better results.

I never had my tubes tied but underwent an ablation last November due to insanely heavy, unexpected, interfering with my daily life periods.
It was day surgery and I had taken the rest of the week off but was lucky to have very little pain. Slight discharge for a few weeks but since then - NO PERIODS whatsoever!
My workmate had it done before me and has a period every 2 months or so but nowhere near as bad as before.
I'm 54 and I wish I had it done 5 years ago.

I was also concerned about the risks when faced with the same decision. I trust my GYN very much and in her experience she had never seen it happen (over 15 years in a large teaching hospital) and reiterated that it was very rare but not impossible. I also recall her explaining the different devices/techniques for ablation and which ones were higher risk for that and why the kind they did was less risky- so you might talk to your doctor about that. But for me, it wasn't a risk I could take. Emergency hysterectomy is just not option with 3 small kids and if something bizarre is going to happen... it will happen to me (she agrees with that too). And at the end of the day, we knew ablation was only going to be a bandaid for an underlying problem in my case. So I will be going the hysterectomy route after the holidays.
I don't know anything about the group where you found the concerning info. But I will also just throw this out there... after years of battling endometriosis and failed treatments/surgeries/etc., I realized that most of the people you will find online are not online seeking out other people to share their success stories. Those people are out living their lives like normal folks. There are a lot of unhappy people with nothing better to do than complain and share their horror stories. It doesn't mean their situations aren't real, but IME they are a lot more vocal and can really skew your opinions if you aren't careful.

Look at the description of the group. It is only for women who have had a bad experience with an ablation. You are not going to get an unbiased opinion from a group like that.

Does anyone know why you would gain weight from an ablation? I have been told by a couple of doctors that it will help with my hormone problems and therefore might actually help lose weight. At least not have them be the cause of weight gain anymore. Now, I have literally bled for several months at a time before, and often crime scene heavy. So maybe that makes a difference?

I had a tubal in 1998 and an ablation in 2004.
I've never had ill effects from the ablation and am so glad I had it done.

I had my tubes tied in 2011 during my fourth c-section. I had an ablation last December due to heavy periods. I haven't had any side effects. I do still get my period but it is very light.

I did it in reverse. Ablation first, tubal six months later. No problems. I can’t see why you would gain weight from one of the other.

Had tubes tied in 1984 and then had ablation in 1992 but went on to have a hysterectomy in 1996 but due to endometriosis ( sp??)
had no issues with it but probably should have had it done before I did. To me it was worth it.
