I want to teach myself how to play. I can read music and I can play the violin just a little............ The ukelele looks like so much fun and there's no one within 100 miles that gives lessons........can I teach myself?

My son also learned from YouTube. He now plays several stringed instruments, but the uke was a great one to start with.

From what I understand, it is a very simple instrument to learn. My DD went for several lessons at a local music store.

totally. Ukelele is very easy to learn and most people pick up by ear with maybe some fingering charts for help.

I started last year. I thought I'd learn to play from YouTube but it turned out that a ukulele group in my community was just starting out so I joined that. A really good guitar/ukulele player was the head of it. We are helping him teach a community ed class this winter. If we want our group to get bigger we have to teach more people to play. I consider the essential chords to be C, G, F, A minor, and G7. Amazing how many songs you can play from those chords. I taught a bunch of fourth graders to play too and they loved it.
I do use YouTube too and you can totally learn to play just using that. I started out with a starter ukulele and bought myself a really nice one for my 50th birthday. I am not even a little bit embarrassed to say that I love my ukulele.
