I just watched the first episode tonight. So the guy who was accused of raping a pregnant handmaid who was them killed by the handmaids - did Offred know him? I felt like she recognized him before she started kicking him. Was I supposed to know who he was?

I don't believe she knew him. I don't recall that from the book nor from the series. Perhaps someone else remembers otherwise though.
I am planning to rewatch the series in preparation for the next season. The first season covered the book, so we'll be "off book" from here on!

I didn’t get the impression she knew him. I took her expression to more about what was happening and not recognition.

Thank you. Sometimes when I watch shows with a lot of characters I forget the faces, so I thought maybe we had seen him earlier in the episode and I was supposed to remember him. 😂

I don't believe she knew him, to me it was more a look that said so much about the awful situation she was in knowing she couldn't get out of it and resigning to the violence she had to be part of. It was about recognition of her place not of the guy.

I just finished reading (okay I listened to it on Audible during my commute) the book last week. I want to watch the series, but we don't have Hulu and I doubt DH will be happy with me getting a subscription just for this 1 show. Ugh.
In the book, this scene happens towards the end so it's interesting that it's in the first episode.....

There is a similar scene in the book, but it was changed for the show.
In the book it comes later, there's a guy who is helping the handmaidens, and he gets caught and there is a scene where he is accused of a crime against them and they are expected to kick him to death. Offred hangs back because she knows he helped them but her friend rushes forward and kicks him hard several times in the head and Offred is shocked that she would do this because she knows he helped them. Later she asks the other handmaiden about why she kicked him so viciously and she says that she did that to make sure he was unconscious before the rest of the group started in on him. So the other handmaiden basically got in and killed him/knocked him out as an act of kindness because she knew that his death would be a lot worse if she didn't. She knew that there was nothing she could do to save him, so her next best option was to ensure he died quickly.
In the book it's quite a brutal scene, so I don't know if that's the reason they changed it or not. The show is mostly the same as the book but there are some minor changes. In the show this scene makes the point that this is what happens to men who don't uphold the laws of the Gilead regime but in the book there is quite a bit more detail around this specific event.

In the book and 1990 movie, Ofglen said she knew him, that he was part of the resistance. It is weird because in each of those Offred, doesn't participate much but in the 2017 series, she gets right into it.
