Well, our fall weather is in full swing. Looking for a getaway in December. We’ve stayed in the Mayan Riviera a few times and want to go back. Choosing between the Barcelo and another resort we’ve stayed at in the past - azul fives. Azul has large great rooms and fantastic food. Smaller pools and beach. Looking at the Barcelo because girls are getting bigger and maybe they’d prefer bigger pools and beach. More action. Smaller rooms, food not gourmet, but grounds sound fantastic. Or maybe we can get away without action for 1 more year. Girls are 9 and 12. Any Barcelo experiences?

I stayed a few years ago with a friend, no kids. We loved it. 2km of white sand beach, you can snorkel off the dock and see fish, occasional ray or turtles. Lots of activities going on. We really enjoyed the dining (stayed at the Eldorado Royal a couple of months before, so I know the gourmet dining at Azul Fives). Buffets were good, lunch at the beach grill was a bit repetitive. A la carts were fantastic.... Japanese was our favourite (book it twice!), then the Italian. Rooms are standard. A fair size though. Bathrooms were large. I believe they have all been reno'd since we were there. Kids club looked fun. I didn't tour it. Love the hammocks around the pool between the palapas. Lots of activities on the beach and by the pool but they aren't annoying asking you to join all the time.

I read that it’s hard to book dinner reservations and some kids activities cost extra $. I hate both of those things. Wish you’d pay when you booked and that’s it and wished they didn’t do dinner reservations until you were dressed, walked down and put your name on a list.

We got vouchers when we checked in for the restaurants. Went directly to the concierge and booked all of them for the week. No problem. We even changed one later and didn't have issues. Yes.... some activities are extra, but we didn't do those. I believe the fees are for the mini golf, bowling, waterpark and the tennis at night bc of lights. They are specialized things. Not everyone will use them, hence the fees. There is a coupon book when you check in depending on rate/tour operator contract. I'm sure there are waterpark tickets in there.
I'd stay again in a minute.
