I'm curious, does anyone know if rub-ons "expire" or have a certain "shelf life?" Does it differ based on manufacturer or just the conditions where you keep your rub-ons? I tried some Chatterbox (defunct company) rub-ons the other day and they were toast--- they didn't work so I threw the package away. I'm just wondering because I have other brands and am wondering if they are worth keeping or not.

I don’t know about a shelf life but some do work better than others. And I have found some of mine where the rub-ons have fallen off the backing sheet. Ugh! I just keep mine and toss them as I come across ones that are bad.

It’s a crap shoot even if they’re brand new. I have had some that were actually used on a project that eventually dried out and flaked right off the pages ruining an entire finished album, so now I won’t use them at all anymore on scrapbook layouts. I might use them on a card or some other thing that someone will likely look at once and throw away later, but not on anything I am hoping will last a lifetime.

They definitely do, from what I've heard on Shimelle's videos. She's talked about it several times. She reminds people not to hoard them because they won't transfer well after a number of years. I would think the degradation depends on manufacturer and on storage conditions, but I'm not sure which conditions are better or worse. I would guess that sun and heat probably speed up the breakdown, but I don't really know what the chemistry of rub ons is.

I won't use rub-ons for SB LOs but will only use them on cards or other short-life projects.

I just went through my rub ons a year or two ago and I have been scrapbooking since 2004 so I've had quite a collection. As others have said they may not have a shelf life but depending on the company they may or may not work after a period of time.
Some of my favorites were made by Hambly and I LOVED them at the time but when I went through them a couple of years ago they would not even come off the paper at all. It made me so sad because they seemed like they were of such high quality at the time.
I actually just pulled out some Heidi Swapp, American Crafts and Making Memories rub ons to use in my December Daily album this year and they have all came off like butter.

I've always heard they do. I guess I've been lucky, though - I have some Dear Lizzy, MME, and Crate Paper ones from several years ago, and they all still work fine.

I have a small sterilite drawer will lots of rub-ons in it, I rarely used them then and just ignore the drawer now...but I just pulled out a booklet that had seasonal rub-ons from DCWV I think, and used a word for my planner and it went on beautifully. I might grab those MM alpha letters out and try them But I agree it wound depend on manufacturer and storage.

good ones don't. i still have lots of the MM rub on alphas and they are still good to this day. cheaper brands have stuck to the transfer sheet and stayed there. or they come off but don't stick to anything.

I have had a lot of rub ons go "bad". But I also have many that are still good despite spending years in my stash. Making Memories, Doodlebug, Basic Grey, BoBunny and Crate Paper are the brands I've had the best luck with.

I have a set of Chatterbox rub ons that I've always found difficult to rub on. As others have said it really depends on the brand. I've got Making Memories and GinX ones that are still beautiful to work with after all these years.

I have some that are cracking and falling apart. But I recently used some Fancy Pants and Making Memories rub-ons and those were still in perfect condition.

How odd this came up. I was just looking at mine while cleaning my scraproom. I think I'll pack some for my crop next weekend. Most of mine are alphas, so I'm hoping they still work! I have a whole Iris case full of different colors and styles.

I have some pretty old... close to decade old, that still work very well. The making memories and basic grey ones have never failed me. I have found that if the rub ons are still intact, not cracked the Basic Grey Rub on Roller works every time. Another favorite tool of mine.

I had some old ones that definitely didn't work anymore so it does depend on brand.

I still have those Making Memoties alpha rub ons that came on a 5-6" strip and were on a small binder ring. You got a ton of them in a package. After 15 years they still work. I wasn't as lucky with some other brands. I stopped buying rub ons a few years ago because of the shelf life issues. I go with stickers now.
